Effective Management for You and Your Dog
Management is a key component in your goal of achieving a well-mannered dog. Management, not training, can be the difference between a chewed couch, stolen food off the counters, numerous holes in the backyard and complaints from neighbors for barking. Good management essentially means setting you and your dog up for success. That is to say, understand that your dog is not a furry person but an animal that possesses a set of instincts which guide her behaviors. In order to successfully communicate with your dog, it’s important to understand what these instincts are and how you can use them to your advantage. For example, dogs are den animals who enjoy and relax in tight, enclosed places. Being den animals, their instincts usually tell them to keep their den clean. Crate training uses the dog’s natural instincts to help you with destructive behavior as well as housetraining. Crate Training is one of four main management tools that owners need to be aware of. How many you use will be determined by your goals and lifestyle with your dog.

Dinner with the dogs
I have written many times about the importance of adoption and even about the local heroes of dog rescue. I would like to ask you to join me in the support of a local group of dog rescue heroes and the dogs whose lives they save.
BullyWag is having a fundraiser on three different Fridays in August. See the picture of the flyer above for the dates.
The fundraiser is being held at Ruby Tuesdays location in Newnan, GA. This is not much of a drive for any of you in the Atlanta area. On these Fridays, if you mention BullyWag to your server or your bartender, 20% of your Bill will go to BullyWag (and please dont forget to tip your server and/or bartender).
Many of the BullyWag dogs will be there. If you are looking for a new pack member, I encourage you to stop by!
Thirty One Bags will be on-site and a full 10% of sales will go to BullyWag.
Copper and I will also be there to demonstrate loose leash walking and some of the positive reinforcement techniques that we teach. I will also give free consultations. I always provide discounted services for adopted/rescued dogs.
I will also be bringing our tiny foster beagle, Penny to the event. If I have room in the truck, I may also bring little Cody the Beagle who is the latest dog that the Lovely Shane and I adopted.

Facts About Dog Training
Dog training can be one of the most important investments that you make in your dog. If you can instill obedience and loyalty in your dog as a puppy, you will have a family friend for life. You can learn more about how important training your dog is.
If any sudden behavioral issue occurs, take the dog to the vet to make sure that there is not a health issue involved. Sometimes pain and other health conditions can cause some animals to act strangely or lash out. Animals cant tell us when something is wrong, so they depend on us to interpret their behaviors.
Your puppy may need obedience classes so that it can listen to you. The instructor can give you ideas about how to handle problems like not listening, and excessive barking.
If you are welcoming a guest into your home, give them clear instructions about how to interact with your dog. These reactions may actually encourage dogs to jump up on your guests or attempt to dominate them.
Learn alternatives to treats as positive reinforcement when training your dog. Treats do work for teaching a new behavior. However, you may not always have a treat with you to congratulate you dog outside of regular training sessions. Verbal praise and physical affection, such as hugs and petting, can be just as effective as treats to reinforce any desired behavior when training your dog.
Stop your puppy immediately if he is chewing on something he shouldnt. This will help your puppy to learn what things he is allowed to chew and what he is not. He will then be less likely to chew on your belongings and instead will turn to his toys when he wants to chew.
Get your dog used to the things they will encounter when going for a vet visit. Touch your dog gently down the sides of his body and tell him he is being good when he does not react. You will want to get him ready to tolerate the doctor touching his mouth and paws. Your friends may be able to help you out, too.
Dogs can concentrate on one thing intensely and you will have to learn to break his attention. If you keep up with his training, your dog will look to you more often for direction rather than looking to the environment.
Dont let your dog make the decisions as to when to pay attention. If you dont feel like making time or having enough energy to give the dog a command, dont do it.
Avoid tug-of-war games when training a puppy. These games often encourage a puppy to start biting. Dont let this behavior take root by avoiding these games until the dog is older.
Your dog should know the difference between right and wrong at all times. This means everyone living in the house needs to enforce the boundaries you set. This will undo all your training!
Tell your house guests how to interact with your pooch. These things can lead to your dog trying to establish dominance, or he may jump on a guest.

Recalls and Attention Games
Of course the structure of anything solid, comes from a strong foundation. It seems simple, but gets complicated...especially when you talk about dog training. We tend to look at trained behaviors as being separate and taught separately. However, when a dog lacks basic foundation behaviors, it is hard to teach it to do what we want it to do, like function calmly and properly in social situations. The most basic foundation behavior is one that people often fail to reinforce. We call our pets, or whistle to them and they come to us, or look at us in response. This is the most important tool that we can exercise with our pet, yet we often take it for granted. Every time your dog comes to you or looks toward you, it is a strengthening of the bond you share, a strengthening of the foundation of your relationship. Unfortunately, unintentionally people will sometimes poison this bond. If you interrupt your dogs (unwanted) behavior, perhaps calling the dog out of a potentially dangerous situation, then reprimand the dog for the event...this is poisoning the command. Humans expect dogs to understand what they are upset about; which is the outburst or the disobedience. However, the dog is probably connecting the reprimand to the action of coming when called. Because the dog often looks sheepish, we assume it understands and feels guilty about what it has done, but more than likely what we are perceiving is fear. The dog is actually coming to fear us and learning that it cant trust us as good leaders. Each time we punish a dog by calling it to get it to come, or to get its attention and then reprimand it, we destroy the bond we have formed with it. We are in essence destroying the very foundation we strive to build.
Coming when called, or solid recall, is the most important foundation behavior that we as dog owners and handlers can work on. Most situations can be prevented or avoided by calling the animal out of it. A strong recall can save your dogs life! Most people that have problems controlling their dogs also have problems getting their dog to come. This reasons to say, that they might also have weak foundations on which they base the rest of their training. The way to begin properly training your dog is to first figure out how to get its attention. (I wont say undivided attention, because dogs will always have distractions that they find hard to resist). Nonetheless, at least knowing how to get your dogs attention will aid you in being able to keep its attention long enough and often enough to teach it the skills it needs to be a great companion and pet. All dogs have different distractions, drives and motivations. In the beginning you should practice all recalls without distractions and find out what is most likely to draw your dog to you. Is it food, is it toys that make squeaky noises, is it fun gestures or a game of chase? Dogs are simple...they will almost always give their attention and be drawn to the biggest distraction. The trick to teaching good recall is to make ourself as alluring as possible and practice it whenever possible. Often people call their dogs in a stern voice and expect them to obey. For the most part, they will come when called in this manner...unless there is something they like better or something distracting them that lures them away. We need to teach our dogs to choose us over their distractions. Through repetition and positive reinforcement the dog will learn to always choose you as the most interesting and consistent source of reward. Strong recall takes a lot of work, but it is the most important thing you can teach your dog.
The easiest attention getting exercise is rewarding any and all voluntary attention. If your dog looks at you, engage it, give it a treat or praise. If it comes up to you or returns its attention to you...make a huge deal out of it. This is reinforcing good behavior. Sure it is not something that we commanded, but it is still an excellent foundation behavior that if gone unnoticed, will not strengthen. If you reward it, your dog will likely offer it more often and automatically. If your dog offers you its attention, then you will not have to worry about trying to get it! If you want your dog to come or do something other than what it is engaging in, you will already have done the ground work...with very little effort. In fact in this exercise the dog does most of the work for you. I think the reason this practice often goes unnoticed is because it is so simple it seems silly. Another reason people dont reward their dogs freely is that they dont want to spoil the dog or give it too much food. If you dont want your dog to gain weight from "excessive treating", then cut back on its daily meals. Eventually, you can find other things to give your dog as rewards. Food is simply something they relate to and instinctively strive to earn access to. If you dont want your dog to get spoilt, dont reward anything other than good behavior! If you want a dog that comes to you when called and is very interested in what you are doing or wanting it to do, make yourself the most delicious or interesting thing in the room or the situation. The easiest way to do this is through a reward system, treat training or praise. Getting a dogs attention is easy...make it fun! Ironically, making it fun for your pet, also makes it a lot more pleasant for you. Coming when called and recalls can be turned into attention games that are easy to do and will most likely lead to faster success for you and your dog.
Positive Reinforcement Dog Training
What is it? There are so many different training styles, how is the average pet owner supposed to know what is the best method, or piece of equipment for their dog? Over the past 15 years Unleashed has heard it all. Here are some phrases that pop up when I talk to clients about positive reinforcement training? “I don’t want my dog to get fat,” or I don’t want her to do it just because I have cookies.” These are valid concerns that I agree with. But, the fact of the matter is, that although food can be one component of positive reinforcement dog training, it is certainly not the only one. Most owners want to do the “right thing” by their dog and teach them manners and commands without using force. Effective use of motivators and a relationship built on trust, consistency and leadership is the key. What motivates your dog? Is it the ball, is it a belly scratch, is it a trip to the park, is it a stick, pine cone, or is it food? The list can go on and on. Once your dog figures out that you control her resources and you control her motivators, what won’t she do for you???? Positive reinforcement training allows you to build the relationship you strive for with your dog using tools that your dog loves….just ask her to work for them. Folsom, El Dorado Hills and the Greater Sacramento Area have such wonderful outlets for dogs. As a pet owner, you understand that the more control you have of your dog, the more freedom your dog has because she’s a joy to bring places. Unleash your dog’s potential!

The Costs and Responsibility of a Dog

It seems that lately I find myself quite frequently in conversations with people about the cost and responsibility of having a dog as a member of your family. I therefore consider it prudent to discuss it a little here on this blog.

Food is expensive, but this is not the only monetary cost that needs careful consideration. It has been said that time is money. Well regardless of the breed or age, your dog requires a considerable amount of your time. You can not just leave the little guy at home by himself for 12 hours a day. It is not fair to him and will absolutely ultimately lead to behavioral issues!
Here are a few monetary costs ( remember this is not an all inclusive list feel free to comment with additions):

- Grooming
- Heartworm tests and preventive medication
- Pet Sitter for vacation
- Crate
- Bedding
- Toys
- Treats
- Training

- Vaccinations

I mentioned time. It is important that you walk your dog frequently. Take them with you whenever possible on errands, etc. This is important for their continued social development. Also do not underestimate the amount of time required to feed, water, and let out for exercise. You also need to take sufficient time for ongoing training.
I am not telling you any of this to discourage you from having dogs. It is just really important to realize and understand the costs and responsibility before your welcome a new dog into your pack!

He is a very small Beagle. We just got him from the Fayette County Shelter. We are treating him for what we think is a respiratory infection. So he will likely not be available for adoption for a couple of weeks. He is a cute little guy. He seems to be an adult but a young one. Probably around a year old.
