Dealing With Your Puppy Tips And Tricks To Generate A Effectively Behaved Pet

,

If you choose your dog from an wildlife save, its behavior could be a lot far more subdued on the shelter than it will be after it settles in your house. With many fundamental training, you can instruct your pet to behave much better more rapidly.

If you have received a dog or dog and you have crate qualified them it is recommended to try not to keep these inside for more than several or five several hours at the same time unless of course its over night or its simply a after-in-awhile thing. If you need to get them from the crate for extended amounts of time, a pet dog almost certainly wasnt the most suitable choice for you.

After it is a chance to leash workout your brand new pet or puppy, you must let him know that you are boss. Penalties does only make him scared of you together with it doesnt basically appropriate the behavior. One important thing that you ought to do, is make a quick leash in order that he needs to remain proper with you. Tend not to allow him to direct you. You happen to be director, not him.

People who own dogs will find fantastic benefit in simply being affectionate in the direction of their pets. Beneficial encouragement has been proven to function greater within a instruction situation than negativity. Puppies are sociable beings and really like compliments. Your time and efforts will help a lot in the direction of increasing future training sessions as well.

Keep your puppies are productive and getting a great deal of exercises. Feeling of boredom usually befalls an inactive canine, or this individual get themselves inside a "mutt rut" with a dull and listless routine. Dogs without any passion will likely be more difficult to coach than energetic dogs. If your pet is match and articles, he is going to be much more likely to heed your recommendations. You and the puppy can operate or walk together day-to-day.

Create a normal agenda for your puppy. Ensure his foods are simultaneously each day, and move him morning hours and night. Attempt to get him out for lavatory smashes employing a consistent schedule. Canines usually thrive when they have a routine they can stick to.

You may need to consider different treats until you determine what works for your puppy. There are a lot of numerous canine treats out there, but your dog has his very own preferences and personal preferences the same as all others. When a distinct handle doesnt manage to get your pet inspired, try something different.

Ensure that you get everyone associated with education. Should you be the only family member working together with Fidos actions, then this other members of the family are giving him mixed signs. Consistency is extremely important in proper dog training. Also be sure that most people are using the same keywords and incentives so the habits is going to be established appropriately. Off of and down are two different things into a dog, so ensure you arent complicated him.

If you are instruction your pet, do not recurring orders repeatedly to find the puppy to obey. As opposed to teaching your pet dog to accomplish the things you say, reproducing the same command when your puppy doesnt listen offers them an attitude of indifference. Give your directions firmly, as soon as, and demand the canine do whatever you say.

When your normally effectively-behaved and housebroken pet begins showing very poor behaviors, for example urinating inside, accept it to some veterinary to eliminate any medical conditions. A lot of medical issues might cause a dog to act out. Dont reprimand your sick pet for demonstrating that it is unwell aid it.

Make sure youre not strengthening an unfavorable habits. You dont would like to give your pet snacks or unique attention during training if theyre not executing the job effectively. If you, then theyll think youre pleased and continue to do stuff just how theyre carrying out them, and they wont enhance.

In case your dog looks discouraged or becomes stressed when you are going to go out, your pet may well experience divorce anxiousness. To assist your puppy check out the day time, depart a thing that has your smell into it, for example a classic piece of clothes. This could suggest that your pet dog is not going to miss you a great deal.

A good training your dog hint is to understand the entire body terminology you make use of. Puppies seriously consider your body words and its crucial that you are giving the right message. Speaking an excessive amount of may also mistake dogs, so its advisable to be concise as to what youre trying to say.

Instruct your puppy the "Let it sit!" control. This order is very important in day-to-day situations. Make use of it should your canine attempts to grab food items off of a dinner table or take in rabbit stools when you are out to get a stroll. To find the pet to adhere to your control, keep a reward within your fingers (have one out of the other fingers, also). Hold your hands open, and whenever he goes for the take care of, shut your hands when you say the control "Let it rest!" Then offer you him the other handle, and eliminate the one you shared with him to go out of. Continue doing this step once or twice, and the man will be taught to "Let it rest!" if you tell him to.

Will be your canine acquiring each of their necessary nutrients and vitamins? Like children, canines could get definitely hyperactive and struggling to concentration when their diet is not approximately spec. There are niche meals available for specific dog breeds. Becoming a Canine Foster Parent

,

Foster Girl Penny

Foster Girl Lovey
Foster Flunkie Trigger

Foster Boy Tiny (renamed Copper Top by his adopted mommy)
I thought it prudent to write about being a Canine Foster Parent.

The pictures on this post represent many of the dogs that The Lovely Shane and I have recently fostered in our home. You will notice that some of the captions indicate a dog to be a  foster flunkie. This is not a bad thing. These are dogs that fit so well in our pack that we decided to adopt them ourselves making them a permanent member of our pack. In other words, these dogs now have a forever home at the Dog Training/Foster Shack!

Foster Girl Gracy
A few of these fosters are still in our pack as foster dogs. Most of them, however, have either found other fosters whose packs were better for them or they have found forever homes.

So, I will start by defining what exactly I mean when I refer to as a Canine Foster Parent. In general terms, the Canine Foster Parent provides a temporary home for a dog that has been rescued  from a high kill shelter, a owner who could no longer care for him/her, being a stray, or some similar unfortunate situation.

Foster Boy Charles the Duke of Fayette County (or just Charlie)
As a foster, we treat the foster dogs very much as we do our own adopted dogs. They become temporary members of the pack and temporary members of our family here at the Dog Trainer/Foster Shack.

Foster Boy Dr. Phil McBeagle
With the support of the rescue organization with which we are affiliated (BullyWag, Inc.) and their donors, we take care of all the foster dogs needs. We arrange for them to go to the veterinarian when needed. We work on housebreaking if needed. We do some basic obedience training with them so that they are well on the way to becoming a polite little guy or girl. We feed them. In short, we provide them with love, routine, and care. The routine is important. It is important that they are exposed to a typical home environment so that they have a better chance at finding a perfect forever home. Having them in our home allows us to observe the foster dog in a typical home environment. We begin, very quickly, to learn about their "personalities", for lack of a better word. It helps us to provide better information, to a potential adoptive parent about how well they may fit in a particular adoptive home. This ultimately greatly improves the chances that they will find a loving forever home!

Not all dogs are a good fit as a foster with your pack. Our pack is comprised entirely of adult and senior dogs. Most of our pack are beagles or other scent hound or scent hound mixes. So, a young playful puppy is generally not a great fit in our pack.
Foster Flunkie Leopold Butters Stotch or just Butters

Sometimes, however, it is difficult to  discern how a particular individual will fit with your pack until the individual has spent a little time in the fosters home.

There is no stigma on your efforts as a foster or any hard feelings on the part of the rescue group if a foster does not work in your home for any reason. The safety and well being of all the dogs in your pack, as a foster parent, has to be your greatest concern. If a new foster is inducing stress in the rest of the pack or being too aggressive, most of the time, your best option is to find a more suitable foster for the individual that is inducing the stress or displaying the aggression.

Foster Boy Biscut
Being a Canine Foster Parent is not for everyone. It is a commitment. You will also become emotionally attached to the foster dog. This always happens to us. We reason it out in the following manner: Any foster that leaves our house for a forever home is a life saved. This is very literally true. When a foster gets a forever home, provided the forever home is not our home, this frees up our resources so that we can help save the life of another foster dog. This is a beautiful thing!

Many people ask me how long we typically have a foster in our home. The correct answer is that it varies very widely. Some dogs are adopted very quickly. One little guy, named Whiskey, was only in our pack for about a week. Some dogs take much longer. Copper, my demo dog, was with his foster parents for over a year before I adopted him.  Some dogs leave our pack before they are adopted. Foster boy Biscuit, was with us for a few months. He was an older puppy at the time. In the beginning he did very well. However, he eventually hit the puppy adolescence stage and was no longer a good fit for our pack. He became much too willful and active for our other dogs. He then found another foster home where he could play with puppies for much of the day. This was much better for our pack and for Biscuit.

Foster Boy Whiskey

Fostering dogs is a very rewarding and fun experience. However, it is a commitment in a similar sense to your commitment to your own adopted dogs. If you are considering becoming a foster parent, you will have to commit to caring for the fosters. This commitment involves the same things as does an adoption. You need to provide exercise for them. You will need to arrange for their care when you are away from home (this is done with the help of the rescue group with which you are affiliated). It is not a requirement but, I strongly recommend that you work with the fosters on obedience training just as you would your own dog. You dont have to work with a professional trainer but you should do things like get the dog to respond to his/her name, come when called, and walk properly on a leash. This will make the dog more adoptable.

It is not a requirement that you have other dogs at home. However, this sometimes helps the foster dog to learn routines and how to behave in a typical home. Dogs really do learn faster when other well behaved dogs are in their pack. However, many foster parents only have foster dogs at their homes. These are really special people!

You will also learn a great deal about dogs by fostering. You are exposed to dogs from differing backgrounds. Unfortunately, many times, you see the direct results of how abuse and neglect can effect a dog. These cases are heartbreaking but when I see a dog progress after one of these terrible situations it really makes me feel blessed to have been involved in helping that dog find a happier life! Some of the abuse toward dogs of which people are capable may sicken you for a while. Things like a dog that is starving or a dog that has been beaten really bother me. However, it is a great blessing to be in a position to help these wonderful creatures that God gave us as a gift. I truly view each of them as a special gift from God. I think you will too as a foster parent!

If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, please contact me for the names of some of Gods special servants in the Dog Rescue world who will be happy to have you as a foster family!

There is a great need for foster families! Rescue groups always have more dogs than fosters. So, you are needed!

By the way, I am currently writing a book about adopted dogs. I intend it to also be very helpful to foster parents. The working title is Parents Manual for Adopted Dogs (all rights reserved). I intend to have it published in electronic format in early 2015. I recently wrote a blog post about it if you are interested.

What sort of harness or collar is good for a dog who pulls on the leash

,

Dogs that pull on the leash is the second most common thing that people ask me about. Second only to housebreaking. If you have a dog that pulls on the leash there are loose leash walking techniques that you can learn. I will be happy to teach you how to train your dog to walk properly on a leash using these techniques.

For a dog that is really bad about pulling, in addition to the loose leash walking techniques, I also suggest a no-pull harness.

There is a difference between a no-pull designed harness and a traditional flat harness.

The green and black and the orange and black harnesses pictured above are both flat harnesses. The orange and black one is a mesh comfort harness. Both of these are good for their intended purpose which is to distribute the pull from the leash across the body rather than at one point on the neck ( as with a flat collar). They do prevent choking. However they offer no resistance to pulling. They actually tend to encourage pulling because the dog gets no resistance.

There are a couple of options that I recommend for no-pull harnesses:
The Petsafe Easy Walk is a very good solution. The handsome Labrador in the picture is sporting an Easy Walk harness. It has a D-ring in the front of the collar. The d-ring in the  front is attached to a buckle that pulls the two nylon pieces in the front tighter when the dog pulls, thus giving the dog resistance. When adjusted properly, the harness does not really squeeze the dog it simply gives him resistance. The Easy Walk is the harness that I used to teach Copper proper loose leash walking technique. It is a really good product however, my experience has been that it does not fit all dogs properly. The other caution I will give you for this harness and pretty much any no-pull type harness is that they are only for walking. After the walk they need to come off because the dog can easily chew them up. Copper chewed up two of the Easy Walks because I neglected to remove them after walking.

The Beagle in the picture is wearing a typical no-pull harness that is available in many different brands at your local pet stores. It has a little bit of mesh in the front but it is different than the mesh flat harness. Notice the padded strings that attach to the mesh and go behind the little beagle guys front legs. These strings are attached to the d-ring to which the leash is attached. When the dog pulls, he feels resistance on the strings. When adjusted properly, this does not hurt him, he simply feels resistance. This is the type of harness that I am using now to train Cody, our newest addition to the pack. This harness is generally about half the price of the Easy Walk and seems to fit a wider range of dogs. The Easy Walk is a little easier to get on and off the dog, however.  I will give you the caution again that this harness needs to come off  the dog after a walk. They will chew this one too!
The brown collar here is a martingale collar. These are very popular with people who own sight hounds (or greyhounds). The reason they are popular is that they do not easily pull over the head. This is important with the sight hounds because typically the neck is wider than the head. After your dog stops pulling as much, you may want to transition him to a collar for walking. The martingale is a good choice. When adjusted properly, the martingale fits snug when the leash is pulled but does not choke the dog. I have a martingale on Copper. I have the leash connected directly to the martingale most of the time when we walk. It took a while to make the transition.

These are the products that I have used in training many times and I know that they work. There is a new product that I have heard nothing but good things about from people I respect. That product is the Walk-in-Sync harness. It is a little more expensive but seems to have the advantages of the Easy Walk while fitting a wider variety of dogs. If you are interested you can find more information at http://dogwalkinsync.com/ . At some point later on, I will test this product and post the results on this blog. The black lab in the picture is wearing a Walk-in-sync.
If you have a dog that pulls on the leash and/or is not well behaved on walks, please contact me at any time. I will be happy to help you!

Till next time

After a rough few months the Dog Trainer is back!

,
Dog Trainer just before back surgery
The Lovely and Awesome Shane
As many of you know, I have not been working much the last several months. I have had some pretty severe problems with nerve pain in my right leg. It turns out that the problem seems to have been a pinched nerve in my lower back. The nerve was being pinched by a ruptured disc.

After trying physical therapy and three rounds of very uncomfortable steroidal injection in the lower back, I had surgery to remove the offending disc material. The surgery was done two months ago.

I am still having some pain but it is getting better every day. I am not yet back to doing all the handyman work that I usually provide but, I am back to dog training!

The lovely and awesome Shane has been, and continues to be a big help to me!
Copper is ready for work!

Copper, my demo beagle,  is also looking forward to getting back to work! We are both ready to help you with any training issues that you may have!

If you would like Copper and I to help you train your dogs to be polite little guys and girls, please contact us!

Aspects That Can Influence How to Train a Dog

,

There are various methods used to train a dog. How you choose to train a dog will rely on a number of aspects. The very first aspect you should look at when you are deciding ways to train a dog is what is your function in getting this pet dog. Are you getting it for friendship? Do you mean to show your canine? Are you a high energy individual searching for a running mate? Do you want your canine for security functions?
how to train a dog online

Another factor to take a look at when deciding how to train a dog is what kind of doggie are you getting? Are you getting a reasonable size pet dog like a German Shepherd or a small little pooch like a chihuahua?

When choosing how to train a dog is the age of your new pet, a third element to take into consideration. Are you attempting to practice a young puppy or are you handling the difficulty of an older canine maybe one from the shelter.

Lets now look at exactly how these factors will influence your choice in ways to train a dog.

The very first thing I discussed was essentially why are you getting this animal? Then you really only require to concentrate on the principles of canine training, if you are getting this pooch simply for companionship. As a companion animal, your doggie will need to know the basics commands of pet training like sit, remain, come, down and heel. Other than housebreaking which really is primary on the training list and socializing your young puppy does truly not require any even more training. Taking your doggy to an obedience course will definitely help with socializing and will assist you to acquire the abilities you have to execute the training at home.

Now if you chose to get the canine for defense functions, your pet dog is going to need a lot more training than just the basic commands. Off if you are getting a dog for protection functions, it is usually going to be one of the bigger breeds. Devices to practice them will be quite different then equipment utilized to practice a companion animal.

You do not want to train your canine to heel or sit however rather to be ahead of you and to stand when you stop. Once more the devices made use of to practice your dog to show will be rather a little bit different than the devices used to practice your pet dog in obedience.

So when you are deciding ways to train a dog keep in mind the different factors that I discussed that can impact your choice. Bear in mind even if your pet dog is just for companionship training is crucial and actually need to just end up being a way of life in between you and your pet. Likewise keep in mind that in this manner of life ought to be a satisfying one.

What should I do if a dog fight starts

,
I always enjoy watching Snoopy fight the Red Baron. However, real dog fights are not a matter to be taken lightly.

The issue came back into my mind when I read a story on the news about a dog fight that happened in a Petco Store in Austin, TX. The local ABC TV affiliate in Austin has the story on their website at http://www.kvue.com/news/Petco-responds-to--214415401.html .

Appearently, this particular Petco is located in a higher crime area than the one at which I worked in Peachtree City, GA. The Petco in Austin felt it necessary to hire an off-duty law enforcement officer as a security guard. A fight broke out when a dog got away from its handler and attacked another dog. For some reason that is obscure and nebulous the off-duty law enforcement officer decided that the best way to handle the situation was to fire two shots from her handgun into the dog who was the aggressor. This all happened inside the store.

I realize that I may not have all the facts regarding this situation however, it appears to me at least ,from my reading of the story, that there are multiple things wrong here. Readers and friends, I have been around dogs for the vast majority of my life. I have seen many fights break out among dogs over the years. I have never used deadly force to break up a fight. There are too many less dangerous options.

It is particularly remarkable that the shots, in this case, were fired inside a store that was open and presumably had other customers inside. The officer did move folks out of the line of fire before killing the dog however that does not give me much comfort regarding the situation.

I am no physicist nor am I a firearms expert. However, my common sense and rudimentary knowledge of physics and firearms leads me to the conclusion that discharging a firearm under any circumstances in this type of environment was a very dangerous undertaking. Even with people outside the line of fire, the projectile fired from the weapon could have ricocheted off any number of surfaces and hurt someone or some other animal.

I am also perplexed about why the security guard was handling this situation in the first place. This store presumably has a dog trainer. I was the Dog Trainer at the store at which I worked. As part of my training to become a Petco Certified Dog Trainer I was taught the proper procedures to use in the unlikely event that a dog fight broke out in my store or in one of my classes. The store management and other staff knew that I was qualified to respond to urgent situations involving dogs in the store (a dog fight, a dog running loose in the store, etc.) . I was never armed and would not have shot the dog twice in any attempt to break up a fight.

Okay..... Now that you have a wonderful example of the absolute wrong way to handle a dog fight perhaps I should explain the proper way. It is not rocket science. Dogs are not all that complex.

The best way to address this is prevention.  When you are out in public with your little buddies, I strongly suggest that you adhere to a three foot rule regarding other unfamiliar dogs. I always maintain a three foot separation between my dogs and other unfamiliar dogs. Remember, if the other dog is unfamiliar to you, there is a great deal of important information regarding the other animal that you do not have.  If the other dog has not been properly socialized or is not up to date on vaccines an up close encounter with your animal could be dangerous and ill-advised. Some dogs have severe dog aggression issues sometimes these dogs are great with people but dangerous with other dogs. This can happen for a variety of reasons but, for our purposes here just realize that some dogs are great with people but very aggressive and perhaps ever territorial with other dogs.

No matter how careful we are however, sometimes things, beyond our immediate control, occur and we are confronted with a dog fight. Sometimes they are just little disagreements that can be broken up pretty easily and are more noise than actual fight. Other times however, they are very dangerous for the dogs and any people who attempt to break them up. So, you must understand how to do this properly.

First, as I have written before, dogs take their cues from you. Remain as calm as possible! If you yell at the dogs and are overly agitated the dogs sense this and it makes things worse.

Next do whatever you can to divert their attention from a distance. Make a noise. There are little air horn like devices sold for this purpose. In a pet store you could kick a shelving unit or something like that
to get their attention. If the fighting does not immediately stop try throwing a blanket or towel or something over or between the dogs. We would utilize the big dog beds for this purpose at the store.

If this still does not stop the fight, you can use water. We always had a bowl or two of water for the dogs in the training area. These can be dumped on the dogs. We also sold citronella spray. The dogs hate the smell of this stuff and it can be useful in redirecting their attention.

In the extremely unlikely event that the above measures fail, you will have to take more up close physical action. Please read this carefully. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU GRAB THE COLLAR OR THE FRONT OF THE DOGS THAT ARE FIGHTING. You dont want to be this close to the mouths and more importantly the teeth. If possible have a helper handle one dog while you handle the other. Grad the HIND legs. In order to prevent further injury to the dog grab the leg as close as possible to the dogs body. This will prevent it from twisting. Lift up kinda like you would lift a wheel barrow. Then spin the dogs away from each other. Get them as far away from each other as possible. And get them medical attention if needed.

Remember also, any breed can be aggressive and dangerous under certain circumstances. So, please be careful with your little buddy when meeting new dogs. I used to always cringe when I saw strangers in the store letting their dogs sniff each other on leash in the store. This is not a good idea. A great deal of problems can be averted by simply following the three foot rule.

Also learning about dog body language is helpful. I will be happy to teach you what I have learned over the years about reading a dogs body language. Many times situations can be averted if you just know the warning signs and entirely avoid dogs that are showing aggressive or stressful body language. I give these stressed or aggressive guys much more than three feet. It is beyond the scope of this blog to teach the body language. But if you are interested, please contact me and I will happy to teach you what I have learned.

Be safe out there with your little buddies!

Welcoming a foster member to the pack Penny the tiny Beagle!

,
The Lovely Shane and I are trying something new. Today we welcomed a new foster member to our pack.

Penny is a tiny beagle. She is about a year old. She was rescued by Bully Wag from a  shelter in rural North Georgia. Because the shelter is in such a rural area the kill rate is comparatively high. She just got back from surgery today. She was spayed and had a hernia removed. She is doing pretty well from what we can tell. She is very underweight. We are going to work on putting some weight on her. I dont think it will be too difficult.

For at least the next couple of days she will be mostly resting to recover from her surgery. After she gets to feeling better, Copper and I will begin training with her. We are very encouraged because she is already responding to her new name. By the way, Michelle picked the name, Penny, because she has a copper like coloring on her head. Since Copper is more of a boys name and Michelle already named one of her rescue dogs Copper (my demo dog, Copper Whopper) this new little girl was named Penny like the copper colored US coin.

Very soon we will be taking her to Petco in Peachtree City on Saturdays from 12-4pm. She will be with the other Bully Wag dogs. Her first trip to Petco will be Saturday August 3, 2013.

Her appetite seems to be very good. Tomorrow I am going to stop by one of the local pet stores and get her some Nutri-Cal. Nutri-Cal is a high calorie vitamin supplement. It is great for putting on weight and stimulating the appetite. It is a thick syrupy paste. The dogs really seem to love it. They will usually eat it right out of the tube.

I often recommend Nurti-Cal to people who have dogs that need to gain weight. But, if your dog has a health problem that is causing him/her to loose the weight always check with your veterinarian first.

In Pennys case the weight loss is most likely from malnutrition.

I do not normally encourage people to use a name brand when a generic is available however, in this case I always recommend the Nutri-Cal brand. When I worked for Petco, in my experience with customers, the Nutri-Cal worked much better than the Petco generic. It is worth the extra cost.

I will keep all of you posted on Pennys progress.

As always, if you are planning on adding a new member to your pack, please, consider adoption. If you are interested in adopting a cute little Beagle girl, please contact me or Michelle Crampo at BullyWag for more information on Penny and adoption in general.

If you have a dog related question or have any dog training needs, please contact me.

Till next time

What to do with a dog who is malnourished or underweight

,
If you look closely in this picture, you can see
that Foster Girl Penny the Tiny Beagle was
underweight when we first brought her to the Dog
Training/Foster Shack
All too often, we , as dog lovers we have to care for malnourished or underweight dogs. Sometimes it is a result of some sort of illness. Sometimes we take in a stray or adopt/foster a little guy or girl who has simply not eaten regularly in quite some time.
Boomer the Beagle in his later years

As many of you know, in the early 1990s I adopted a sweet beagle from the Dekalb County (GA) Shelter. He was a 9 month old anxious little guy named Boomer. Boomer was my companion until he died of renal failure at the age of 15 years. We had lots of fun together and I learned a great deal about anxiety issues in dogs from working with him.

When he was about eight years old, I was working as a Computer Network Engineer/Consultant at a now defunct company in Sandy Springs, GA called Consultec. Boomer got sick. I do not remember exactly what the health issue was now but a nasty side effect was that he lost a lot of weight very quickly. I could see all his ribs and some of his backbone. His normally extremely healthy appetite had disappeared. He would not touch any of his favorite foods. This was very unusual for him and just not at all beagle-like.

At the time, I lived in Marietta, GA. Dr. Tyler Huhman and Dr. David Lawless at Tritt Animal Hospital in Marietta, GA were the veterinarians that helped me to care for Boomer and a few cats that lived with me at the time (or maybe I lived with them.... you know how cats are ).

The guys a Tritt did an excellent job treating Boomers illness! However, the home care was my responsibility.  I think it was Tyler who told me that the most important goal I needed to have was putting weight on Boomer quickly. I believe it was at his suggestion that I used Nutri-Cal in an attempt to stimulate his appetite and to load him up on the calories and nutrients that he desperately needed. I think Tyler gave me (or sold me, I dont recall) some prescription food that was formulated to help him gain weight (if I could get him to eat it).
You cant really tell now but, our little Cody was also
malnourished when he got to the Shack.

I worked from my small home office for about a week (we used to call that telecommuting). During that time I cared for Boomer almost 24/7. I gave him medication for his illness and almost constantly tried to get him to eat. He would eat some canned food and I slowly began getting him to eat the Nuti-Cal. Slowly he started to eating peanut butter that I offered him and eventually he began eating his dry food. It was a long week but he finally began eating well. After a couple of more weeks he was almost back to his healthy weight. And I seem to remember that after he put the weight on ,I spent a month in Minnesota on business over the next three days (at least that is what it felt like :) )

I did not just share that story with you so that you can see how cool my life was in those days (that is just an added bonus :) ) . I shared that story with you to make a few points about caring for a dog who is underweight or malnourished:

  • If you notice a rapid weight loss, please, consult a really good veterinarian. There is generally an underling cause that probably needs to be treated.
  • If your dog is not eating foods that he normally loves, if it lasts more than a day or so, you should really strongly consider taking him to a veterinarian.
  • Once you have any health issues treated, it is your responsibility to care for the little guy or girl. You must be diligent about it! Always remember that your veterinarian will be more than happy to talk to you about methods that you can use to get him/her to eat. If your dog is not making progress, do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian for guidance!
I mentioned Nutri-Cal earlier in my work with Boomer. Nutri-Cal is a high calorie vitamin paste. There are other similar products on the market. Most large pet stores (i.e. Petco, Petsmart, etc.) have their own store brand products that are labeled for the same use. When I worked at Petco, I found that our vitamin paste was good but some really picky dogs seemed to prefer the taste of the Nuti-Cal product and the price difference is not huge either way.

In many cases the dogs will eat this stuff right out of the tube. However, in many cases you have to put it on the food. In Boomers case, I put some of the stuff on my finger and sort of stuck it to the roof of the mouth to get him started. It is really sticky and he had to lick it off the roof of his mouth. He did not really like this but it worked.
Foster Boy Sammy

I decided to write about this subject today because, The Lovely and Awesome Shane and I are working with our new foster boy, Sammy on the same issue. He is very thin. His ribs and backbone are clearly visible. I am happy to report that he is beginning to get his appetite back! This morning he actually finished his entire bowl of food for the first time since he got here three days ago!

If you have a dog who needs to gain weight, it is not a hopeless problem! It can be very frustrating but, there is hope and it feels really good to see a little guy or girl finally eat and gain weight!

Our foster girl Penny the Tiny Beagle had the same issue. She gained a little weight we she was with us. I saw her with her adopted family recently and she looks great!!

If you have questions about getting your dog to eat please contact me! Also contact me if you need help teaching your little guy or girl to be a polite dog. I always tell you: " Polite Dogs = Happy People". Let me help you get happy today!

Till next time

Sick as a Dog

,
What a way to turn over a new leaf.  From my death bed.  Okay, Im probably being a bit dramatic there, but I do feel terrible today.  Yesterday, at a post-surgical doctors appointment, they did the routine blood pressure, pulse and temperature, and, surprise to me, I had a fever.  I felt fine, but by the evening it was starting to become apparent.  I woke this morning with terrible fever-sweats and have fought a sour stomach all day.  I just hate feeling sick - theres always too much to do. Moms and entrepreneurs never get to take a day off.

Hopefully this will go as quick as it came on.  I have two lessons tomorrow, with an existing client and her aggressive Aussie/Chow/Brown-Dog-That-Hopped-the-Fence Mix, and with a new client and their very boisterous "Im too cute to listen" Labrador.  The day is set to end with Ethans schools big fundraising event. Its an auction and I have donated a "dog training" basket (including a 10-day board & train or 7 private lessons) which I hope will bring the school enough money to make it worth my while.  And to not hurt my pride.

Are getting littermates a good idea

,

What do you all think?? Feel free to chime in on this question on our Facebook Page, but read ahead to see what Unleashed says…

I wish more people asked us this question before they get the dogs. Unfortunately, we usually get this comment after they’ve hired us to help them…”I wish someone told me this wasn’t a good idea!”

Getting littermates isn’t all-bad. The dogs are usually very nice dogs! And, you only need to go through the potty training and puppy-chewing phase once. Those are some pretty big pros.

The problem is that there are two of them! Many owners are under the false impression that two dogs are easier than one…”they have each other to play with.” The fact is that we never recommend that someone gets another dog unless they want another dog and have twice as much time to commit to another dog. Don’t get another dog to keep your first one company! The novelty can wear off quickly and then you have two dogs that are chewing things up in your yard or barking excessively.

The three biggest things to consider when you look at getting littermates is your relationship with your dog, training and socialization. Relationship is probably the most important part of having a well-behaved dog. Dogs are pack animals and need to feel part of a pack. Ideally you want your dog to be totally and completely bonded to you. With littermates, it’s much harder to achieve this relationship because they already have their pack, with their littermate. Littermates don’t “need or want” their owners company as much as each others’. To remedy this, make an effort to separate the puppies for a short time on a daily basis in order for them to learn how to be alone. This is an important life skill. It also gives you a chance to bond to the other puppy.

Training is tricky with littermates. Take it from us, training two dogs together can be almost impossible.
Effective obedience training requires consistent reward and impeccable timing. The ideal thing to do is to separate the dogs when they are learning new behaviors. Once the behaviors are solidified individually, then try to work with them together.

Many owners who have littermates don’t realize how important it is to socialize their dogs separately with other dogs and with people. During puppyhood, it’s extremely important to take your puppy safe places and expose them to the real world. Expose them to safe, older dogs, children, shopping carts, skateboards, etc. Let them see the world. This is much harder to do with two dogs than one.

What do we recommend? We always tell people to wait at least 6mos before adding another dog to your pack. That gives you time to bond to the first dog and get them off to a good start from a training standpoint. Then if you feel you are ready for the commitment of another dog, go for it!

Dancing with your dog a new type of freestyle obedience!

,
Doggie freestyle dance isnt really a new thing, but it is relatively new to the public. It developed in Canada out of freestyle heeling as an entertaining way to compete in obedience. When costumes and dance steps were added to heeling routines to music, dog dancing took on the form of a dramatic routine. Although the possibilities are endless, there are many things you can do with your dog to create a dance that is both fun, but also a great way to work on heeling and also communication. I have recently been asked to start a cha-cha with your dog class at Bosleys in New West. It will be held on Friday nights at seven until eight and begin on August 9th.

This summer I had the opportunity to attend a seminar with Dante Camacho who is an agility master and also a free style dance competitor and instructor. Here is a video on how to get started on targeting and also on how to build the foundations of the tricks you can transfer to dance routines. It is fun to train these behaviours, then link them together into a routine to music. The music is key to the performance and you need to pick a beat that suits you and your dog. You also need to consider what works in terms of the speed at which your dog can perform the behaviours.

Check out this video of Dante Camacho demonstrating the foundations of heeling and targeting!

Ways to Train a Dog at Home Usual Mistakes to Stay clear of

,

You have got yourself a pet or young puppy of your dream but have no experience or understanding about the best ways to train dog so that he can become your faithful and obedient buddy. Once you have actually discovered to interact with your animal, the job to practice your pet at house will no longer remain tough.

best Ways to Train a Dog at Home - Usual Mistakes to Stay clear of

Keep in mind that pet dogs are wise animals and are quick students too. Canines are always in the process of finding out brand-new things each day. The moment a brand-new born puppy open its eyes, it starts absorbing actions from its surrounding. Either those actions fall in the classification of loyal behavior or not, it still does exactly what he desires unless he is instructed by someone. When in residence or in public, many owners of canines spend a number of hours with their pet to make them comply with and follow the policies. Unfortunately not all them succeed in training a dog that they are proud of.

The most typical error that nearly 75 % of the pet dog owners make is that they scream at their pet dogs when the canine either does not obey its owner or does something makings the owner annoyed. Remember that by doing this you will not have the ability to raise a confident dog and would just be making your pet more scared and confused.

To train dogs by punishing or beating is likewise not encouraged. Never hit or spank your pet dog. There can be lots of reasons that lead to striking a pet dog, the most typical is that dogs have a habit to remove inside house even when they have been trained to do so outdoors. Dealing this sort of behavior, you need to initially make yourself believe that hitting will not clean the mess that has actually already been created and it will likewise not make a dog realize why he is being treated in this manner.

Many dog owners fail to connect with their pet effectively. They use different signals to send out in the same message to their pet. For instance when they wish to call their pet dog, they often use one hand and occasionally make use of both hands therefore making it tough for the dog to comprehend exactly what his master desires from him. This is a very fundamental residence training mistake that you should prevent at all costs considering that it will prolong the training duration.

It is actually unfortunate to discover that bulk of the puppies and canines are returned to their shelters or previous owners just since the brand-new owners either failed to make those pet dogs obey or they were too lazy acting as they did not understood how to train a dog. With little effort and some perseverance, pets can end up being clever and loyal pets and will make their owner happy instead of being humiliated or fretted.

Quick Tips for a Solid Stay

,
It seems most dogs who have taken any obedience class know what stay means. Stay, or don’t move from the position I put you in, can be an incredibly convenient command for owners. How many of you can honestly say that your dog’s stay is solid? Will they sit and stay when you see a friend outside of Starbucks in El Dorado Hills? Will they lay down and stay when you have guests over for dinner on these warm Sacramento evenings?

These are the kind of stays that we’re talking about. The key to a successful stay is practice. Generalize your stay command by practicing it in a number of different places. Don’t combine duration and distance when you are first starting out. Practice one at a time. Keep the exercises short and successful. Most owners push it too fast and set the dog up to fail by not reinforcing enough and setting unrealistic expectations. Practice with minimum distractions and gradually build, making sure to praise often. And finally, make sure you have a specific release word that your dog understands to mean he is done with whatever you’ve asked of him.

Obedience is fun for you and your dog. But, remember it can also be a huge help in achieving your long term lifestyle goals in dog ownership. Do yourself and your dog a favor by continuing to practice and build on the obedience you’ve already achieved.

The Safest Way to Break Up a Dog Fight

,
By Ed Frawley: http://leerburg.com

"To break up a dog fight requires 2 people. Each person grabs the back feet of one of the dogs. The dog back feet are then picked up like a wheelbarrow. With the legs up, both dogs are then pulled apart.

Once the dog fight is broken up and the dogs pulled apart it is critical that the people do not release the dogs or the dog fight will begin again. The two people need to start turning in a circle, or slowly swinging the dogs in a circle while they back away from the other dog. This stops the dog from curling and coming back and biting the person holding their legs.

By circling the dog has to sidestep with its front feet or it will fall on its chin. As long as you slowly continue to back and circle, the dog cannot do any damage to you. To insure that the fight will not begin all over again when you release the dogs, one of the dogs needs to be dragged into an enclosure (i.e. a kennel, the garage, another room) before the dog is released. If you do not do this, the dogs will often charge back and start fighting again or if you release the dog to quickly the dog will turn and attack the person who had his feet.

Dog fights are a very dangerous thing to try and break up alone. You should never rush in and try and grab the dogs to pull them apart. They are in high "fight drive" and are not thinking clearly when fighting. If someone grabs them they will bite without even thinking about who or what they are biting. This is how your loving pet can dog bite the living crap out of you in about a second and a half.

In reality it probably doesnt even know its biting you. I compare it to a bar fight. If a person comes up behind 2 guys fighting and just reaches out and grabs the shoulder of one of the combatants most of the time the fighter is going to turn and throw a punch without even looking at who or what he is hitting. This is because his adrenaline in pumping and he is in "fight drive".

The worst case scenario is that you are alone when a serious fight breaks out. There are a couple things that you must keep in mind:

Keep your cool you have a job to do.

Do not waste time screaming at the dogs. It hardly ever works.

Your goal is still the same; you must break up the fight without getting hurt.

Go get a leash (allow the fight to continue while you do this).

Dogs are almost always locked onto one another. Walk up and loop the leash around the back loin of the dog by either threading the leash through the handle or use the clip. I prefer the thread method.

Now slowly back away and drag the dog to a fence or to an object that you can tie the leash to. By doing this, you effectively create an anchor for one of the dogs.

Then walk around and grab the back legs of the second dog and drag it away from the dog that is tied up. Remember to turn and circle as they release.

Drag the dog into a dog pen or another room before you release the back legs.

Go back and take the dog off the fence and put him or her into a dog kennel.

Sit down and have a stiff drink (or two).

People talk about using cattle prods or shock collars to break up 2 pets that fight. I can tell you that many times this is not going to work. The electric cattle prod or electric collar will only put the dogs into higher fight drive. When they are shocked they will turn and bite the prod, or when they are shocked they will think the other dog is causing the pain and they will fight harder. An electric collar is best used in conditioning training, but not during an actual dogfight.

A point I would like to make is that if you see two dogs out there squaring off through body posturing (i.e. one dog with stiff legs and tail straight up in the air putting his head over the shoulders of the other to show dominance) do not run out there screaming "NO NO NO!!!!" Most of the time this is going to trigger the fight. A lot of times dogs will posture and one will give in and back away. They settle their dominance issue without a battle. I NEVER, NEVER, NEVER recommend testing this situation. Its not worth the fight that erupts if you are wrong."
