Dancing with your dog a new type of freestyle obedience!

,
Doggie freestyle dance isnt really a new thing, but it is relatively new to the public. It developed in Canada out of freestyle heeling as an entertaining way to compete in obedience. When costumes and dance steps were added to heeling routines to music, dog dancing took on the form of a dramatic routine. Although the possibilities are endless, there are many things you can do with your dog to create a dance that is both fun, but also a great way to work on heeling and also communication. I have recently been asked to start a cha-cha with your dog class at Bosleys in New West. It will be held on Friday nights at seven until eight and begin on August 9th.

This summer I had the opportunity to attend a seminar with Dante Camacho who is an agility master and also a free style dance competitor and instructor. Here is a video on how to get started on targeting and also on how to build the foundations of the tricks you can transfer to dance routines. It is fun to train these behaviours, then link them together into a routine to music. The music is key to the performance and you need to pick a beat that suits you and your dog. You also need to consider what works in terms of the speed at which your dog can perform the behaviours.

Check out this video of Dante Camacho demonstrating the foundations of heeling and targeting!

The Way To Instruct Your Aged Dog New Strategies

,

It is usually stated that one of the biggest tension relievers is always to have is actually a family pet, particularly a cat canine. Canines tend to be taken to healing establishments to soothe individuals and convey them joy. Naturally, for those who have ever had a whole new animal dog in your house, then you already know that it could take just as much stress as it does huge smiles. The best time to begin training your dog starts when it is nonetheless a dog. Nevertheless, no matter what age, instilling powerful training in your pet dog is extremely beneficial now and in the long run. These are generally some methods that you can get probably the most satisfaction away from your pet by means of proper dog training.

When jogging your dog over a leash, by no means retain the leash way too restricted. A tight leash creates a counter-top tension reaction and might increase the risk for puppy to get uptight or agitated. Your pet dog could then take, rather than move effectively around the leash. Becoming a lot less limited with the leash maintain enables to get a easier jogging experience.

Bear in mind that you are not going to possess a properly skilled puppy right away. Changing actions is a lengthy process that calls for lots of achievements and plenty of setbacks. If you are not education from your puppy, this process might take even longer as your puppy will have to both unlearn poor behaviours and learn brand new ones. Remain calm and youll commence to see outcomes.

Education your puppy should start off around six or seven weeks aged. The previous you can begin coaching your brand-new dog, the greater the results will probably be. Studies have learned that pet dogs would be the most open to education from 6 to 14 several weeks outdated so use that time smartly.

Center on producing the education sessions with your pet enjoyable. All pets react much better after they appreciate simply being very good. Use what ever your dog enjoys, which includes games, focus and rights, to make education a game instead of a laborious task. You will probably be surprised at the kind of effects you get through your dog.

To break your pet of undesirable habits including bouncing, the ideal strategy is to ignore him, just for a brief time! Canines dont really fully grasp shouting in times like that. However, if you change your back and get away from more discussion, hell get the notion that hes completed a thing that smashes connection with you together with puppies need to be our close friends!

Training your dog may be irritating. If you have found yourself to be annoyed since you are certainly not making improvement, proceed to take a rest prior to trying it once again. The canine is usually seeing you together with learning, so if it might watch you are upset it is going to take action within a similar approach.

Spend some time on a daily basis training your puppy, even when for just one or two minutes a day. Dogs respond properly whenever they arrive at exercise what they are studying and what they have learned. Exercising no less than quarter-hour a day on directions your pet already understands keeps the canine in practice.

In the event you dont would like dog to chew your household furniture, which makes it distressing, may help. There are many very clear and odour free of charge merchandise in the marketplace that one could put on a product. These products will make the piece taste nasty or annoying, and thus, deterring your furry friend from biting it.

Physical exercise is a vital aspect of coaching a pet dog. A dog that does not have sufficient physical exercise may have better levels of vitality. This electricity comes out as biting on stuff, messing around with people, running in your home, or other unwelcome activities. Exercise will assist one particular possess a achievable dog to work alongside.

One particular idea to be aware of when coaching your pet, is usually to be guaranteed to in no way willpower your dog for bad habits as he is sick. This will likely only mistake your dog and may lead to him to not respond to self-discipline down the road. Types of this may be, when your puppy vomits or defecates in a fashion that is just not standard to his standard behavior.

Remain calm. Since you are consistent within your training and the dog understands everything you expect, you can expect to slowly see improvement. Praise your pet for upgrades and attempt to make training sessions a confident time and energy to appreciate with all the dog. As the pet learns which you give rewards and admiration for swift obedience, inspiring results should stick to.

Your puppy should know how to "stay" like they know the back of his paw! The "rest" order is useful for a multitude of factors, and is also a behavior that can be created on. Use a "sit down" action that may be intuitive for his physique - to put it differently, he should be searching for at the hands, that helps him sit down naturally.

Your dog should be able to identify which actions are acceptable and which can be not. Everyone in the home need to regularly enforce the borders you might have established. This will undo all your training!

Instruct your puppy hand concentrating on to get a enjoyable and new project that will give you two with each other. Palm focusing on is a way of training your dog to follow and touch your hands. This actions may be created upon and transformed into retrieval actions afterwards down the road. It makes for a entertaining undertaking for many types!

Use appropriate rewards and punishments when education your pet. As an example, several puppies respond positively when recognized by using a preferred take care of for good behavior. At the same time, bear in mind that too much penalties can backfire. Instead, use a constant strengthen of tone of voice or command phrase to suggest to the puppy whenever a behavior is undesirable.

Big puppies that prefer to lie down on the backside or stretch out, out ought to have a major bed to obtain comfy in. You will find large, rectangle beds designed for huge dogs, or you could just buy your canine a crib mattress. Just employ fitted crib bedding to protect it. They are often taken away and cleaned very easily. An additional benefit is these bed mattresses are waterproof.

Training your puppy can actually present a lot of challenges and also benefits. Adhering to these tricks and tips for instruction your pet dog persistently can lead to a much better-behaved dog. Time invest now to implement these strategies means there will be much more time to savor the business of mans companion.

Congratulations on your new puppy!! Now what ! !

,
Congratulations on your new puppy!! Now what?!?!
A new puppy in the household is an exciting time for everyone. You and your family have a vision of how your puppy will grow and mature into the dog you’ve always wanted. You know your pup needs training. There are so many books out there and suddenly every friend and stranger you meet is an expert on how to train your puppy.
Raising a puppy is a lot of work, but it can be such a wonderful experience as well. Let Unleashed help you take the frustration and mystery out of it. There are four main components of getting through puppyhood successfully. They include…
1. Having realistic expectations
2. Knowing and using the appropriate management tools
3. Setting the foundation for relationship early
4. Proper socialization
Everyone agrees that it’s important to socialize your puppy. However, that is easier said than done. The experiences your pup has, specifically with other dogs, at a young age can shape their perception of other dogs for the rest of their life.
The Puppy Basics Class at Unleashed Dog Training and Behavior Center is not about just throwing your pup in with a bunch of other pups and hoping they get “socialized.” Unleashed Puppy Basics Class is specifically designed to teach your pup how much fun other dogs can be as well as teach them appropriate manners around puppies and well mannered adult dogs. And, your puppy won’t be the only one learning important skills. As your dog’s pack leader, it’s important that you understand how to set your dog up for success and create an environment that your dog feels safe in. The Puppy Basics Class will focus on the 4 main components referred to above as well as some foundation training, like coming when called and leash manners.
Classes are held in the El Dorado Hills/folsom area. Come enjoy our clean, new facility

Coming in 2015 New Book!

,

That is the Lovely and Awesome Shane on the cover with our cover boy,
Foster Boy Charles the Duke of Fayette County (We just call him Charlie).

I am happy to announce a new book on which I am working. The working title is Parents Manual for Adopted Dogs (all rights reserved).

The book is intended as a reference manual for people who have adopted dogs in thier packs. In addition to that, it is also intended as a guide for those of you who are contemplating adding an adopted little guy or girl to your pack.

There are sections of the book regarding the most common behavioral and medical issues associated with adopted dogs. The book also leads you through getting your home ready for your adopted dog and introducing them to the pack.

The book details the monetary and time commitments that are necessary for the care of your adopted dog. The book also details what behaviors and training are necessary to help your adopted guy or girl become a polite dog. Because, as many of you understand, Polite Dogs = Happy People. This book is intended to guide you to the happiness that you can obtain from your relationship with your polite adopted dog!

My plans are to, at least initially, make this book available in electronic format for some of the popular e-reader devices (i.e. Nook, Kindle, etc.). Dependent upon the success of the electronic book, I will likely publish the book in a printed format.

I need some feedback from you, my readers. Please let me know which e-reader you currently use. Also let me know of any specific topics that you would like to see covered in the book. You can do this in the comments on this post or, if you would rather send me an e-mail or call me, that is fine as well. My contact information is at the bottom of this post.

Thank you all in advance for any help that you can provide on this project.

I expect to be ready to publish the book in electronic format around the beginning of 2015.

Till next time-

New January Class Date

,
Group classes seem to be a little difficult to find in the El Dorado Hills/Folsom area. I find that many trainers do not recommend group classes as an effective solution for training. Why is that? Well, it’s most like because these trainers don’t offer group classes and/or have never taught group dog training classes. Effective dog obedience classes are a wonderful, affordable way to train your dog. Many group classes are 6-8 weeks long and are designed to teach you how to train your dog. Most group classes will cover basic obedience commands like sit, down, stay, loose leash walking, coming when called and not jumping up. If done well, group classes provide a positive, well managed environment for your family and your dog. The cost of group dog training classes can range from $90-$200 for the whole session. This cost is in great contrast to private lessons which can range anywhere from $100-$300 per hour session. In addition to being more affordable, group classes can provide an opportunity for much needed socialization and a “support group” for owners with new dogs. Mandy Kennedy, owner of Unleashed Dog Training, has taught successful group classes for 15 years and teaches now with 4Paws University (www.4pawsu.com) in Sacramento. Unleashed offers group classes in El Dorado Hills at Lakehills Church. Please contact Mandy @ unleashmk@comcast.net or (916)605-9778 for any dog related questions.

New Logo featuring Spot and Fred

,

Well I have been considering a new logo. My brother , Stan Moore of Stan Moore Signs (in beautiful historic Senoia, GA) recently made me a really nice yard sign.He actually made two of them because someone liked it so much they saw fit to remove it from the yard here at the shack. If you have my sign, please return it. No questions will be asked.

He used some clip art cartoon dogs that I am calling Spot and Fred. I really like Spot and Fred. I think I am going to begin using Spot and Fred in my materials.

The logo is still sort of in a draft mode but you get the idea.

So, you will be seeing a lot more of Fred and Spot soon! Let me know what you think of them.

Welcome New Foster Boy Dr Phil McBeagle !

,
Dr. Phil checks out the kitchen at
his new foster home (Dog Trainer/Foster Shack)
The Awesome and Lovely Shane, Copper the Whopper Beagle, Cody the Little Beagle, Cuddles the Corgi Mix, Foster Girl Gracy, and I are pleased to welcome our newest foster pack member Dr. Phil McBeagle.

Phil is about 5 years old. He is a tri-color Beagle with some ticking. He is a sweet boy! Phil was surrendered to BullyWag by a family who could no longer care for him. He is not used to being around a lot of other dogs so, we are slowly introducing him to the pack here. He is nervous but seems to be adjusting well in the first few hours.

He came to us with a flea problem and some minor skin issues that I suspect are a result of flea allergy. As you can likely see in the pictures, he is also a little overweight. Our initial plan is to put him on the Copper Whopper exercise and diet program. It is obvious that he likely has not been getting a great deal of exercise.

He will get his booster shots and go the the veterinarian soon to be neutered, microchipped and heart worm tested. After that process is complete he will likely be available for immediate adoption!

He is a really sweet little guy and needs a forever home! He is housebroken. He knows some basic commands like come and sit. The pack and I will work on a little more training for him while he is here.
Dr. Phil after his bath

His former mommy and daddy say that he loves "hot dogs". For those of you who are unaware, we call these "frankfurter on bun" instead :) . He also loves cheese! Copper was helping me teach him today using cheese as a reward. Former mommy and daddy also inform us that, like most beagles, he loves to bay and howl at appropriate times and is quite the lap dog when he has the opportunity. Also like most beagles, he will try to escape if left alone in the fenced yard for too long.

If your home is beagle proofed, you may want to consider Dr. Phil McBeagle (by the way, his former family just called him Phil.... I like Dr. Phil McBeagle better) as an addition to your pack.

If you are looking for a new pack member, as always, Copper and I strongly encourage you to consider adoption! There are very many dogs, like Dr. Phil McBeagle, that desperately need a new forever home! If you would like information about rescue groups in the Atlanta Area, please contact me at any time!

If you need help training your dog to be a polite little guy, please contact me at anytime! You know, I always tell you, "Polite Dogs = Happy People!" Let Copper and me help you to get happy today!

Till next time -

You can teach an old dog new tricks!

,
The Lovely Shane with our Senior Beagle, Cody
Many of you know that I really love adult and senior dogs! I only adopt the older guys. This is because the older guys have a difficult time finding forever homes.  I suppose also that like me, they are a little less active than they used to be :) .

Some adult or senior dogs really never learned good manners. As you may be aware, I always say, "Polite Dogs.... Happy People". It is possible to teach these older guys to be very polite little guys and girls.

Our little Beagle, Cody is a senior guy. When we adopted him and added him to our home, he had some, what I would call "bad manners". He was not good on the leash ( he pulled pretty hard). He also really had no door way manners. He knew how to sit but had not quite mastered stay. He also did not get the concept of "leave it". I wanted to have him leave things alone that I may drop on the floor.

With persistent work, all these things improved greatly within the first couple of weeks.

Cody does have some limitations, however. When he was a younger dog, he apparently broke one of his hind legs. The leg never healed properly. He can no longer really jump and he can not really do the down position.  So, I never taught him down, roll over, crawl or anything that would require too much stress on the hind legs.

I mention Codys limitations because it is important to know your dogs limitations. You should not really expect to train a dog to do something for which he is not physically capable.

That being said, barring physical problems, you can really teach an older dog anything that you can teach a younger dog. Sometimes it takes a little more patience because the older guys may have developed some bad habits that you have to break. However, it is very possible to train an older dog.

Another thing that the Lovely Shane and I like about older dogs is that they are long past the puppy stage. We like this because we dont have to worry about teething( and the chewing that goes along with teething). Also, as a general rule, older dogs are not nearly as hyper as the young pups. Since we already have older dogs in our pack, the really hyper little guys do not fit in as well as adult guys.

We do sometimes foster puppies. In fact, our current foster boy, Biscuit is an older puppy (he is around 9-10 months). Biscuit is actually learning from our adult guys. It is really cool to watch. But, I have to make sure that I give Biscuit plenty of  physical exercise because our older guys do not play nearly as much as Biscuit.

If you are thinking of adopting a dog, an adult or senior dog may be an excellent choice for you. This is particularly true if you do not have children or if your children are teenagers. We really do love our adult and senior dogs!

Copper, our Whopper Beagle is not a senior guy. He is about 7 years old or so (we are really not sure exactly... even the veterinarians guesses vary between 5 and 8). I actually chose him to be my demo dog. I knew when I first saw him at an adoption event, that he would make a great demo dog! I had to work with him quite a bit but, within a month of adopting him, he was helping me with dog training!

The point I am attempting to make here is that if you have an older dog and he/she is not polite and well behaved, do not give up! You can teach your dog to be polite and well behaved!

If you are thinking of adopting an adult or senior dog and are concerned about training, dont worry!

Please contact me at anytime and I will be happy to help you train your dog to be a well behaved, polite dog!

Till next time

New Age Pet Tags

,
It seems like everything these days revolves around our smart phones.  Dont expect our pets to be left behind.  Some things are very high tech (and expensive!), like GPS tracking that can give you the exact location of your dog - or at least his collar - if he gets lost.  But theres a new one thats a little more realistic for the average pet owner.

Pet Hub, a Washington based company, offers dog and cat ID tags with a QR code - that funky square barcode that can be read by your smart phone.  When someone scans the code they are taken to your dogs very own web page.  You keep this page updated with their current information.

The individual web page gives you room for a lot more information than would fit on a tag.  You can list the typical name, address and phone number, and also your veterinarian, any medications, allergies, important behavior issues (like "can climb fences!" or "doesnt like cats"), reward info and even photographs.  Update the information anytime you want - if you move, if their medications change or anything else - you are in charge.  The Pet Hub tag also features a unique web address that can be manually entered, in case your pet is found by someone less technically inclined.

Product Pick PureBites

,
I have a new favorite training treat.  PureBites are made by a Canadian company, and the beauty is in their simplicity.  Each treat is a single, freeze-dried ingredient.  The chicken treats are freeze-dried chicken, the cheese treats are freeze-dried cheddar cheese.  PureBites also come in Ocean Whitefish, Beef Liver, Duck and Trail Mix (which is actually a whopping 3 ingredients - sweet potato, beef liver and green beans).

The best thing about training with PureBites?  Its hard to say without sounding like a spokesperson for the company (though I assure you Im not), but dogs LOVE PureBites.  I have seen some of the most finicky dogs go bonkers for PureBites, and if a dog really wants what youve got, you can teach them to do just about anything.

Since they dont need to be refrigerated, PureBites are easy to take on a walk, to training class or just to keep a few in your pocket.  They arent stinky (with the exception of the Beef Liver, though its pretty mild smelling for liver).  Usually, while unappreciated by owners, stinky is a good quality in a training treat.  But dogs can tell when you get out PureBites.

The last feature I want to highlight: the single ingredient.  Its tough to find treats that can be tolerated by dogs with allergies, but one of the PureBites should work for just about any dog.  If your dog tends to have a sensitive stomach or gets car sick, you may want to try the chicken.  And if your dog needs to loose weight (or just not gain any extra!) chicken is pretty low in fat.

If you are going to use PureBites for training you may want to break the treats into smaller pieces ahead of time.  PureBites can be found in a variety of stores across the U.S., including Petco and Petsmart (try their website to search for independent stores near you) and online at Amazon.com.

The Foster Files Foster Boy Tiny the Beagle has a new forever home! Welcome Foster Girl Gracy!

,
Foster Boy Tiny showing his lose leash walking skills!
The Lovely Shane and I are very pleased to inform you all that Tiny the Beagle has a brand new forever home! After visiting the veterinarian today for Neutering , shots and a cool microchip he went home with his new foster Mommy. He will be part of a two dog pack with a cute little female beagle. His name is going to now be "Copper Head" or "Copper H." for short. Copper the Whopper Beagle and I really like that new name! We already miss Tiny around the Dog Training Shack here but, we are thrilled that he now has a great forever home!

Foster Girl Gracy eating a pecan on the back porch
steps at the Dog Training Shack
The Lovely Shane, myself and the rest of the pack here welcome a new foster pack member. Her name is Gracy. She is a beautiful mixed breed girl. We think she is some sort of hound mix. She is about 8 months old. One of her hind legs never developed properly so she is unable to jump well. However, that does not really slow her down. She is a slightly active and well tempered girl. She does need housebreaking. We are working on that now. She is also learning how to properly walk on a leash and some basic obedience. Copper Whopper and the rest of the pack are enjoying helping her learn.

Gracy will be available for adoption soon!
Foster Boy Biscuit

Biscuit the Basset Mix is now with another foster who has more puppies. This will allow him to play more and work off some of his energy. Our pack was a little low energy for him. He is still available for adoption and would make a great dog for someone with other young dogs or active children.

If you are considering adding a new adopted member to your pack, please contact me at anytime!

Solve All Your Dog Problems with New Dog Training

Having a solid relationship with your canine heavily depends on your canine understanding that you are the authority figure. You are the Top Banana in the household and at the top of the chain of command. You could think this is a harsh way to tackle training your dog but it is a reality for pack animals. High condition is not a commodity for dogs and they need to strive to achieve their rank. High condition could bring benefits for those at the top however psychologically it is more demanding and so it is in their finest interest to be outranked by you. Dogs appreciate those who are dominant. Here are a few suggestions to help you develop supremacy, get your canines regard and for that reason have the ability to deliver effective commands:.

YOU always precede. Thats initially out the vehicle, initially in your home and initially for meals. Make your dog second finest. , if you let him come first hell see this as supremacy over you and become disobedient and tougher to practice.

.

Make sure areas inside your home restricted access to the dog. This sends a clear message to the pet dog that he attends living in your house.

Playtime is necessary but do not let the pet dog dictate when and where this occurs. You should be the initiator of play.
New Dog Training with doggy dan

Keep training sessions short. A dogs attention period is around 10 minutes, anymore and anything you are attempting to convey will be wasted energy.

Expose your canine to the outside world and let it socialise and uncover for itself. When a canine is more knowledgable about its environments it will end up being more comfy and at ease. This helps the canine to discover much better.

Teaching An Old Dog New Tricks

    ,

They say that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, are they right, I’m sure you’ve all heard that famous phrase  “you can’t teach an old dog training tricks”, well, are those who make that assumption correct? They are partly right. An older dog will take a heck of a lot more training and dedication from its handler than a younger dog will, basically because an older dogs mind is a lot more “set” in its ways will clearly take lots more time to teach new things to than a younger dog. An older dog will have passed that crucial period in its life that influences what the dog will behave like when it is older, therefore it already thinks it knows how to behave and trying to teach him other ways to behave can take a lot of time and effort can be difficult. This is usually because an older dog already has set ways of behaving which he or she thinks are correct and are used to. Changing these ways through teaching the dog new tricks could be difficult.

It is not impossible but you can’t train an old dog like you train a puppy. You have to be a little bit stricter on an older dog because they have a lot more intelligence than a puppy and know how to drive you round the bend. An older dog will more likely do something if he thinks its his idea rather than yours, for example if he goes to sit , say sit and then praise him, he will think it was his idea and if you keep on repeating this process sooner or later you will have him sitting on command. This process will work for many of the commands, like fetch, come, stay and heel, this technique and method will prove to be very effective.

Dog training will of course be difficult but bad habits need to be broken and long term habits need to be stopped. Despite the relative difficulty of training an older dog, it has to be done. Your Dog will thank you for it in the end and the end result will be well worth the trouble. You will have a better dog in the end for it.
Training an older dog can be a grueling task but try making it fun by joining a class (they are not just for people with puppies) or try to get some support from family or friends, invest in some training products like toys and treats, or even go as far as a training school, but one thing is for sure once you’ve taught your dog what he needs to know the bond between you will grow and you will become inseparable.
