This post is an update on the Fostering that the Lovely Shane and I are doing in our home (the dog training shack).
Our beautiful tiny beagle girl Penny found her forever home Saturday (August 10). I am sure that she is being well taken care of (I would write spoiled but we dont use that term). She was very happy and her new people were happy too. She will be an only dog (although she will live with a few cats). She will also have a couple of children with which to play. We were sad to see this little girl go but were happy to see her find a forever home! This also allowed us to open our home to a new Foster girl. Lovey is a really cute and very energetic mix breed puppy. She is about 4 months old. We think she is mixed with perhaps Border Collie, Pit Bull, and Labrador. She is a little bit of a challenge because her energy level is much higher than that of our senior guys and girl.
I have begun to work with her on loose leash walking. I must admit, for a young energetic puppy, she is progressing nicely. We have also been working with her on housebreaking and are thrilled to report that she is almost perfect in that regard!
Her recall is actually very good as well. She responds to her name and comes pretty consistently when called.
I have also taught her sit and down. We are next going to begin working on stay. She really seems to be eager to learn and Copper and Cody are helping her! I will keep you updated.

This past weekend was a big event for Orso the Cane Corso.? At just under 18 months old, Orso has completed his AKC Rally Novice title! This means he officially has titles on both ends - a breed championship and his first obedience title. A Rally title requires 3 qualifying legs. Orso finished his third leg with an impressive score of 97/100, placing 3rd in a large class of tough competitors. Huge congratulations go to Orso (International Multi-Champion Mar e Sol Orso di Costa Bel, CGC, TDI, RN ) and his owner, Yvonne Aleman Quevedo of Costa Bel Cane Corso. It was a pleasure training Orso for his Novice Rally competition, and Im glad the hard work has paid off with a title. Keep up the good work Yvonne!

You need help with dog training. You have a new dog, whether it’s a new puppy or a recently adopted dog, you want to help this animal become awell mannered, well adjusted member of your family. Wherever you live in the greater Sacramento and Foothill Area, you will find an array of options for training your dog. Which option suits you depends on a number of factors. Dog training options are usually broken down into 3 categories. There are group classes, private lessons and board & train.
Effective dog obedience classes are a wonderful, affordable way to train your dog. Many group classes are 6-8 weeks long and are designed to teach you how to train your dog. Most group classes will cover basic obedience commands like sit, down, stay, loose leash walking, coming when called and not jumping up. If done well, group classes provide a positive, well managed environment for your family and your dog. The cost of group dog training classes can range from $90-$150 for the whole session.
Things to consider when researching options for dog obedience classes are:
How much experience does the instructor have in teaching group classes?
How many dogs are in each class?
Are there assistants who help the instructor?
Are there any restrictions on specific breeds in class?
What equipment is used on the dogs?

Private Lessons and Behavior Consultations are another option when it comes to achieving your training goals. Private lessons are perfect for an owner who wants to be very involved in the training process, wants to work at their own pace and in the comfort of their own home. They are also a great option for dogs who are not ready or able to focus in the sometimes seemingly chaotic environment of a group class. Private lessons are one on one sessions with a professional dog trainer. You can often tailor the lessons to meet your needs and your schedule. Private lessons move much quicker than group classes, since each lesson is specifically geared to your dog training goals. You can do as many or as few lessons as you like, however, many trainers will give you a discount for buying a “package of lessons.”
The down side of private lessons is two fold. Private lessons can be very expensive. Many trainers charge over a $100 per session. Although an enormous amount of material and information will be gained with a good trainer, it can still add up to be a lot of money. The other down side of lessons vs. a group dog training class is the lack of distractions. Most dogs love to learn and training is a stimulating, mentally challenging and rewarding task for dogs. However, the challenge to stay focused becomes exceedingly more difficult in a group class. For many dogs, this challenge is beneficial in helping to achieve your training goals.
Board & Train is another option for owners to consider when training their dog. Board & Train essentially consists of leaving your dog in the care of a professional trainer for a specified period of time and having them train your dog for you. There are a few Board & Train options in the Sacramento Area. This option works well for owners who don’t have the time or knowledge to train their own dogs. The intensity and consistency that an effective Board & Train Program can provide can result in a transformation of behavior in a relatively short amount of time. On the other hand, Board & Train programs are very expensive and can be frustrating for owners who may find their dogs not responding to them the way the dog responded to the trainer. The bottom line is that it’s always best to train your own dog, but short of that, it’s very important to get detailed instructions from the facility on how you will follow through with the training they’ve done.
Finally, and most importantly, do some research on the style of training you wish to pursue. There are many schools of thought out there regarding what method is best when it comes to dog training. In the last 10 years training methods have shifted to a much more positive style. Unleashed Dog Training & Behavior Center has seen and practiced both methods over the last 15 years and recognizes the incredible potential dogs have for learning. The “old school” method of compulsive training is not fun for owners or dogs, but most importantly, it’s not as effective as a positive approach either.

Honestly, the biggest problem I see when training dogs (and their owners!) isnt jumping up, running away or housetraining. Lastly, learn why it is so important NEVER to buy a puppy (or anything else) from a pet store or a backyard breeder.

Have you heard about clicker training, but dont know what it is? How it got started? Why they are used? What all the fuss is about? And, hey, are they worth it, or is the clicker just another gizmo youd be forced to juggle, as if the dog, leash, treats and poop bags werent enough?!
Ill start with some of the history of clicker training, and what it does, and then (in the interest of brevity, so this post stays short enough for you to read and me to write) Ill go into more detail in follow up posts. Like how to use a clicker, and common concerns about clicker training. Ill probably throw in a video at the end, so you can see clicker training in action and decide for yourself what you think of it (though I think trying it with your dog for a few weeks is the best way to give it a true trial).
So, where did clicker training begin? The concept originated around the time of WWII with Marian Kruse and Keller Breland, students of the famous B. F. Skinner. They used clicker training to teach a wide animals including pigeons, cats and dolphins. Its use in training marine mammals took off (instead of a click trainers use the high pitched whistle we now associate with Flipper and Shamu, but the concept is the same), but clicker training still hadnt really made it to dogs.
One behavior expert was using clicker training with dogs though, and in 1992 Karen Pryor put on a seminar in San Diego, California that would change the face of dog training forever. Along with her book, Dont Shoot the Dog, Pryor began to spread awareness of clicker training and the fantastic results it could bring when teaching obedience commands or modifying behavior.
The basic principles of clicker training are quite simple. The "click," that sound made by the clicker, becomes what is known as a conditioned reinforcer. It is a sound that initially means nothing to a dog; it is quite literally just a click. But, after repeated pairings with food rewards, the click begins to take on meaning. It starts to mean "Yes! You got it right!" It means food is coming, even if you cant see it yet. And it means "All done!" that whatever behavior they have been working on is complete.
How does one sound come to mean so much to a dog? Thats where the "conditioned" part of conditioned reinforcer comes in. Lets use dolphins as an example. Its one of my favorites, as you know if youve learned clicker training with me. Training a dolphin offers some unique challenges. You cant put a choke collar on a dolphin and make it mind. You cant flip it over and pin it to the ground, exerting your "dominance" over him, the way some famous "trainers" would. (Since we cant express sarcasms well in the written word, let me just insert that here. I do not advocate choke collars or dominating your dog, or any creature for that matter. Sarcastic sneer noted.)
Dolphins also swim much better than we do, which makes it hard for us to be near them when they are performing tricks. Training dogs is starting to sound pretty easy, right? Clicker training (or "marker training" - a more general term that can include other types of sounds like the whistle that marine mammal trainers are likely to use) helps with dolphin training in many ways. First, by giving the dolphins a consistent, easy to recognize cue that means the dolphin has done something right, we improve communication and thus speed up training. Marking the exact moment a dolphin performs also allows the trainer to reward for increments of behavior, not just the final product.
Finally, the whistle acts as a bridge (lots of fancy terms this time!). A bridge (in normal-person language) is a way to increase the amount of time between when the behavior is performed and when the reward is received, without ruining the animals understanding of why they are being rewarded. Think of a dolphin learning to jump up and touch a ball suspended 20 feet above the pool. (I have no idea about dolphin training, and its been a while since Ive seen a show, so forgive me if my example is totally inaccurate.) It would be nearly impossible to get a fish to the dolphin at the exact moment that he touches the ball, since the dolphin is way out in the middle of the pool (and 20 feet in the air!) and the trainer is stuck on their little platform. If the dolphin doesnt get his fish within a few seconds of performing the behavior, he wont connect the two. Enter marker training (clicker training if you missed all the bouncing around with terminology)! Because the dolphin has been conditioned to know that the whistle means a fish is coming, the trainer blows the whistle at the exact moment the dolphin touches the ball and, bingo! Dolphin makes the connection and learns the new behavior. And you and your friends pay an arm and a leg to see his show.
What does all this mean for you and your dog? Clicker training isnt just a gimmick, but an effective method based on scientific learning principles. Using a clicker allows you to be clear and consistent in your communication about when your dog has done something right, and also allows you to break a behavior into smaller parts as they are learning. And once your dog is conditioned to the clicker, you can afford more time between the time the dog does a behavior and the time your get the reward to him.
Congratulations on your new puppy! Adding a puppy to the family is an exciting and trying time for everyone. The keys to success when getting a new puppy are:
Realistic Expectations It’s important to understand that puppies are not furry little people. They come with a set of instincts that guide their behaviors. Depending on your puppy’s age, she most likely has been playing with other puppies. She doesn’t have hands so she uses her mouth for play. You will soon realize her teeth feel like little razor blades and she can overwhelm small children quickly. Puppies usually don’t get bladder control until they are about 12 weeks old. So, it’s important to take your puppy out to potty often (every 1 ½ hours). Praise her when she potties outside. Most puppies will need to potty after they eat, sleep and play.
Management
There are four management tools that are essential with a young puppy. You can use all four, or any combination of them, depending on your needs. 1. Exercise is the first and most important management tool. “A tired dog is well-behaved dog.” 2. Crate Training. Dogs are den animals and feel safe and secure in tight, enclosed places.
3. Tie Down. A tie down is a short leash attached to something immobile. A tie down should never be used if you are not home. 4. Dragging Leash. A dragging leash is a 6ft nylon puppy leash with the smallest buckle you can find. A dragging leash is ALWAYS attached to your puppy’s buckle collar when someone is home. Relationship A solid relationship with your dog is THE key component in achieving your dog training goals. Many owners can’t wait to get started with the training of their new puppy and while teaching them sit, down and not pulling on the leash is important, there is plenty of time to work on these commands as your puppy gets older. Spending quality time on name recognition and attention is the priority with young puppies. You want to always encourage attention from your puppy by reinforcing them with praise, play or a treat when they look at you, or follow you on or off leash. Be silly, be unpredictable with your reinforcement and most of all, be fun. This will dramatically improve your chances of achieving the ever-elusive off leash come command when your dog is older.
Socialization Do not underestimate the importance of good socialization for a young pup. Imprint socialization phases your puppy goes through cannot be “done later.” It is important in the development of your puppy’s personality to expose them safely at an early age to life experiences. Many dog owners get mixed messages when facing the socialization question. Some professionals suggest not taking your puppy off your property until she has all of her shots, but by then she has missed some important developmental milestones that cannot be retrieved. More dogs are put to sleep for behavior issues stemming from a lack of socialization than dying from diseases like Parvo and Corona Virus every year. Yes, it is important to be smart when socializing a young pup. Keep her on leash and on pavement. Don’t let her come into contact with other feces. But, take her on walks around the neighborhood. Introduce her to small children, kids on bikes and skateboards. Take her outside of Safeway and let her watch and see the shopping carts, cars, and buses. Introduce her to well-socialized, vaccinated adult dogs. These are all experiences that we want her to see as positive. This effort will contribute greatly to well-rounded, more stable adult dog.
By following these important first steps with your puppy, you are giving yourself, your family and your puppy a head start in attaining your goals for your new companion.

I am happy to announce a new book on which I am working. The working title is Parents Manual for Adopted Dogs (all rights reserved).
The book is intended as a reference manual for people who have adopted dogs in thier packs. In addition to that, it is also intended as a guide for those of you who are contemplating adding an adopted little guy or girl to your pack.
There are sections of the book regarding the most common behavioral and medical issues associated with adopted dogs. The book also leads you through getting your home ready for your adopted dog and introducing them to the pack.
The book details the monetary and time commitments that are necessary for the care of your adopted dog. The book also details what behaviors and training are necessary to help your adopted guy or girl become a polite dog. Because, as many of you understand, Polite Dogs = Happy People. This book is intended to guide you to the happiness that you can obtain from your relationship with your polite adopted dog!
My plans are to, at least initially, make this book available in electronic format for some of the popular e-reader devices (i.e. Nook, Kindle, etc.). Dependent upon the success of the electronic book, I will likely publish the book in a printed format.

It is very common in households around the world to incorporate dogs and other domestic animals into the family home. Puppies, like most baby animals, have mischievous streaks. Read on for some ideas on training your dog.
To have success in dog training, you need to be able to control it with commands. Put yourself in an authoritative position, so that your dog knows to obey you. For example, when you walk your dog you must be in front and you should insist your dog follows behind you.
Have your dog learn to just hold one of his toys in his mouth, instead of chewing on it immediately. Every time he does it, give him a snack and use the clicker. After your dog succeeds in mouthing an object a few times, move on to rewarding the dog for picking it up with his mouth. When he does respond, click and provide a reward. Also, rewards should only be given if the toy remains in the dogs mouth.
If your dog has separation anxiety, its important that it learns to connect with more than one person. The dogs relationships to other people serve to dilute its unhealthy level of dependence and fixation on you that causes it so much grief.
To ensure your training sticks, everyone in your household needs to treat your dog the same way you do and use the same training methods. Consistent methods is your best bet to get your dog to remember something. If teaching methods between people differs, it is easy for your dog to get confused.
Give your puppy some toys to chew on so they do not hurt while teething, keep other things they might want to chew on out of their reach! Give it one of his toys instead. A wet frozen washcloth is great for a puppy, who has teething pain, to chew on.
When training your dog never punish him; doing so will only make him be resistant to any further training. You should make every effort to prevent the behavior in the first place, but if your pet does misbehave, show him what he should have done instead. You should make training a time to interact with your dog, you want to build a positive relationship with him.
Dogs tend to concentrate on one thing to the exclusion of everything else unless that concentration is interrupted. With enough training, you will have your dog focusing solely on your signals.
If your dog suddenly starts misbehaving out of the blue, it is best to bring him to the vet so any health problems can be ruled out. Your dog might be acting out because he is suffering. Since they cannot tell us what is wrong, this is their way of letting us know that they need extra attention.
Consistency is key during your training sessions. Pick a single word or gesture for each command, action or behavior and use it exclusively. Dogs are able to associate repeated words or actions with the requested response. Consistency is essential to training. Establish a short list of vocabulary associated with communicating with your dog.
Using wee-wee pads is actually counter productive when you are potty training your new puppy. The problem with the wee-wee pads is that they leak and leave enzymes from urine and feces behind. Potty pads can also mislead your dog into thinking that similarly shaped items throughout your home, like rugs, are appropriate places to go. The best option is to toilet train your dog outdoors.
Any introductions to new animals should be made very slowly. Give your own pet great consideration before bringing another animal into the house. You can boost bonding efforts by getting a new pet that has a complimentary personality to your own.
Try not to take your sACtress out on your dog by yelling at it because of your bad day or bad mood. Unless your dog has done something that warrants scolding, you should always take on a positive tone during your interactions.
Make sure that your dog has enough sleeping space, especially when the dog is a big one that likes to sprawl. Think about getting your dog an actual dog bed that fits its larger size; crib mattresses work great, too. There are several advantages to doing this since you are able to change the cover with frequency and ease when using fitted sheets. This is also good because mattresses for cribs are waterproof.
Your dog needs to get plenty of exercise. Dogs can get bored very easily. Dogs that lose interest are hard to train. Dogs are more inclined to obey when they are regularly taken out for exercise and happily accepted as a member of your family. It is a great idea to take your dog out on runs or walks through the neighborhood.
Be sure to have your dog spayed or neutered at six months. You should do this at the same time you first take the dog to obedience training. A dog that has been spayed or neutered will be a more obedient dog. By spaying or neutering a dog he will have a longer happier life.
Its important to include your family when training your dog. The house rules and specific expectations will be more apparent to the new dog if everyone, not just the primary trainer, follows the same training procedures.
You do not want to use wee-wee pads when potty training your dog. The problem with the wee-wee pads is that they leak and leave enzymes from urine and feces behind. Potty pads can also mislead your dog into thinking that similarly shaped items throughout your home, like rugs, are appropriate places to go. Teaching your dog the appropriate place to go from the start is always the more practical idea.
Try not to use wee-wee pads as a tool in potty training your day. The problem with the wee-wee pads is that they leak and leave enzymes from urine and feces behind. The pads may also confuse the dog because of their shape. It could cause the dog to think that a bathroom mat or welcome mat is a place to go potty. The best option is to toilet train your dog outdoors.
A clicker works well when training most dogs. Using a clicker is as simple as showing your dog that good things happen when the clicking noise is heard. Try using this technique right away, doing it frequently over a span of a few days. Your dog will soon know that the clicking noise means that they are doing a good job.
By following these tips, you should have a better understanding of how to train your dog. Putting these tips into action while training your pup can help the two of you forge a wonderful ongoing relationship..
I know it is tempting to leave your dog in the car if you are just making a quick trip into a store or something like that. Please be careful. I very strongly recommend against this even if you have the air conditioning and engine running.
As you can see from the chart, the temperatures inside the vehicle can rise quickly. Even with a window partially open it can get really hot, really quickly.
So, you ask, what is the problem with leaving the air condition and engine running? I realize that with two keys it is easy to lock the vehicle and do this. However, please re-think this as well. Automobile air conditioners work much better when the vehicle is in motion. More importantly, they have been known to fail.
When I lived in the Tampa Bay Area, one of the local Sheriffs did not like dogs inside the offices. He required the K-9 handlers to leave their animals in the patrol vehicle while they were in the building doing paperwork,etc. They always ran the air in the vehicle. Well, one day, one of the air conditioners on a patrol vehicle failed. A poor dog died. Well you would think the simple solution would be to simply allow the service dogs in the building. Well apparently not to this Sheriff. He spent many, many tax payer dollars to outfit all the K-9 vehicles with redundant air conditioning systems in an attempt to prevent another dog death. This has been many years ago. I am not certain if the redundant air conditioners really solved the problem.
So, please be careful with your little guys.
If you see any signs of heat stroke or heat related problems in your dog, please get him/her to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
The Humane Society lists the following as symptoms:
heavy panting
glazed eyes
a rapid pulse
unsteadiness
a staggering gait
vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue.
If you notice these symptoms in a dog who has been exposed to heat, please take the following actions immediately! :
After you get him/her out of the heat, do this:
1. Gradually lower his body temperature by applying
cool (not cold) water all over his body or soaking
him in a cool bath.
2. Place cool, wet towels over the back of the neck,
in the armpits, and in the groin area. You may also
wet the ear flaps and paws with cool water. Direct
a fan on the wet areas to speed evaporative cooling.
3. You may offer fresh, cool water if your dog is alert
and wants to drink. Do not force your pet to drink.
Now get him/her to the veterinarian!
This is really a serious matter! Many dogs die in cars this time of the year.
As I have mentioned before, there are many retail establishments that allow well behaved dogs.
For example:
Copper and I were blessed to have the company of The Lovely Shane today. The Lovely Shane accompanied us on a Dog Training sales call and a Handyman estimate trip. We also did an errand or two.

10. My work is flexible. I can be returning phone calls at 9 AM in my PJs, then off to the grocery store, then home again before a private lesson. It allows me to work in doctors appointments, time with friends and preschool events.
9. I make a comfortable income. Not long ago I applied to Petsmart for an open dog trainer position. I thought it would be easier than starting my business over again in a whole new community. They offered me the job, but for what they would have paid me Id need to work an entire day to make what I currently bring in for one hour-long private lesson. I wont buy a luxury vacation home on my income, but it works for us.

There is really no consensus among trainers about the subject of dogs on the bed. There are varying opinions and pros and cons on both sides of the issue. However, in my opinion, it ultimately is about two things: Do you want the dog on the bed and is the dog well suited to be on the bed.
If you do not want the dog on the bed, that is the end of the story. It is your bed. It is your resource to control. If you never allow your little buddy on the bed, he will not expect it.
The lovely Shane and I allow Cuddles and Copper on the bed with certain limitations. As long as they behave they can stay. If they start moving around too much, barking at each other, etc. it is time for them to get down.
Some dogs do not enjoy sleeping all night on the bed. Copper, for example will nap on the bed as he is doing after a long day of work in the picture on the left. However, at night, he sometimes will jump on the bed to get petted, then lay on the foot of the bed for a few minutes, then he will make his way to his bed on the floor.
Cuddles, on the other hand, will sleep, most of the night, on the bed with us.
There are trainers who are concerned that the dogs see sleeping on the bed as a sign of the dog being dominant over the people. My thought is that if you have a dog who is aggressive or is guarding the bed then, obviously, it is time for the dog to get off the bed. However, from a training/behavioral perspective I do not see a need to ban dogs from the bed across the board.
There are also health concerns. I am not a doctor. I do not even play one on TV :). That being said, if you have allergies or medical issues that are impacted negatively by the dog sleeping with you, I think that is a so-called, "no-brainer" decision. In that case I would not let the dog sleep with me. I think what it all comes down to is that it is your bed so you decide if the dog can sleep with you.
I really like having the dogs close by when I sleep. If I did not allow them in the bed with me, I would want them at least in the bedroom. My reasoning is that if they need to go out to potty in the middle of the night they can (and do) bark to wake me.
Now , what I have written about thus far is adult dogs. If you have a puppy, I think you should seriously consider keeping the little guy in a crate at night. This will keep him from getting into trouble while you are sleeping (chewing up things, etc,) and will aide with housebreaking. It will also be safer for him. As a little guy, it would be easy for you to accidentally hurt him by rolling over on him in your sleep.
However, once the puppy is housebroken and has gotten a little older and bigger, if you are comfortable that he will not get into trouble, I see no issue with allowing him to sleep with you on the bed. He has to also be obedient enough to get down when you give the command.
Well, I hope this has been helpful to you. Remember, the bottom line is that it is your bed if the dog is well behaved and you want him there it is fine, if he misbehaves or you dont want him there, that is fine too.

We all know that dogs can’t talk (whether or not we care to admit it is another thing altogether).What they do rely on is body language – lots and lots of body language.While we might approach a stranger and say, “Hey, I’m new here. It’s nice to meet you,” a dog might walk up to another dog in an arc with a slow, circular wagging tail, its ears back and drop into a butt-up, front down stretch.They are both ways to express “I’m friendly and mean no harm.”
Calming signals are just what they sound like.They are behaviors offered by a dog in an attempt to keep a situation calm.We aren’t completely sure if they are used by one dog solely to calm another dog, solely to calm themselves, or a combination of both.My feeling is that the latter is true, especially since calming signals are often both offered and returned.We can help our dogs feel comfortable by learning what their calming signals are and respecting them, and even by responding in kind, repeating their gesture as best we can (tail wagging obviously excluded).
Before getting into what calming signals can be, I want to emphasize that context is important.Think of how a person telling another “you fool!” can be issued as an insult or an expression of teasing affection.Context is important, regardless of species.For example, ears held back on a dog’s head can be a calming signal, a sign of fear, or even just the physical nature of the breed.
You may or may not notice calming signals with your own dog.Unless you recently adopted your dog or have a new puppy, chances are your relationship is fairly established.Your dog may not feel the need to offer these signals on a regular or frequent basis.Unfortunately we can also extinguish calming signals in our pets, even without intention.If a dog offers calming signals that are repeatedly ignored or corrected, eventually they will stop trying.Think about people – if your partner brought you flowers after a fight and you always responded with snide comments about wasting money or stinking up the house, chances are your partner would stop buying flowers – at least for you!Since we are frequently our dog’s entire world, our response (or lack thereof) to their behavior is critically important.
Calming signals may include:
·“Look aways” (turning the head to the side, away from the other dog or person)
·Yawning
·Sniffing (becoming very interested in not much of anything)
·Paw raises (raising one of the front paws off the ground)
·Shake offs (can be a slight shake off or entire body, as if wet)
·Scratching (like they are itchy – a sudden case of “fleas”)
·Blinking
·Lip licking (or nose licking)
·Moving in an arc (approaching or leaving in a semi-circle, not a direct path)
·Sitting or lying down
·Stretching (particularly into a play bow position, though not quite the same behavior)
·Making a “soft face” – ears back, soft eyes, etc.
There are a few signals that you may want to try, either with your dog or a dog you are just meeting.*They can help a dog feel more comfortable, and may even be offered back to you.
Blinking is pretty universal between species – go for slow, deliberate blinks (not fast fluttering). Lip licking is also simple to duplicate.Again, make it slow and obvious. You can actually lick your lips or even just stick your tongue out a few times.“Look aways” involve turning your head to either side, away from the dog. You may then look back, without making eye contact, then look away again.A paw lift is a little more difficult (largely since we don’t have paws and walk on two legs, not four).But if you are feeling daring you can try it with one arm, holding it as if you were imitating a hurt paw.
You may have figured out now how yawning can be contagious.Offered as a calming signal between dogs, or even from dog to human (and human to dog), a yawn is much more than feeling sleepy. It can be offered back and forth, and maybe thats why we feel the urge to yawn when someone near us yawns.

* Offering calming signals doesn’t make it safe to approach an aggressive dog.When in doubt, keep your distance.
Several minutes of internet research reveals that former presidents and rock singers consume at least some quantity of corn. So why do we make such an issue of it being in Dog Food?
Well, the real truth of the matter is that corn is used in the making of most of the more inexpensive kibble because it is a relatively cheap and very available source of carbohydrates. A carbohydrate source appears to be essential in the manufacture of kibble.
Mike Sagman wrote an interesting article for Dog Food Advisor. Here is a link to it http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-industry-exposed/dog-food-corn/. Here he claims to dispel many of the myths regarding the use of corn. I think he makes some pretty good points though it appears that he may have a bit of a bias against the use of corn in dog food.
As I stated in a previous post, I do not really see a major issue with the use of corn if the dog does not have an allergy to it. While arguably foods containing a large amount of corn may not be the most nutritionally balanced, if the dog is healthy and having no allergic reaction to the food I dont really feel the need to fix something that may not be broken here.
Purina actually does a really good job of explaining some of the health benefits of corn on its web site here: http://www.purina.com/meet-purina/nutrition/power-of-grain#/power-of-corn. Both Purina and Eukanuba state that corn provides antioxidants, carbohydrates and fiber. The fiber is important because it aids in digestion.
Blue Buffalo makes an interesting statement regarding corn on its website. It reads, "And of course, BLUE never uses corn, wheat, or soy. These are considered by many veterinary nutritionists to be lower quality ingredients used as fillers and are often associated with pet allergies." What exactly is a "filler"? Well the dictionary definition of the word "filler" is : "filler plural of fill·er (Noun)

Okay, I presume we are not discussing Hungarian money here so filler used in regard to corn would mean that it is simply used to fill the bag and has no other value. I think that is overstated. Obviously corn does provide some nutritional value. So, I dont understand where our friends at Blue Buffalo are coming from here.
2. Why did they not quote some percentage of dogs affected by these "pet allergies" to corn, wheat, and soy?
The quote simply says that corn is "often" associated with allergies. I have been around dogs for a long time. I dont think I have ever run into one that had a known allergy to corn. Based upon my experience I think Purina make a more believable statement when they put the percentage of dogs with corn allergies at about 1%.

Our friends and Hills (the makers of Science Diet) also have some interesting information on corn. They actually call it "An amazing grain". I know it says cat in the link but they reference dog food too.
So, dear reader, you really sort of have to weigh all this stuff and decide for yourself. I have nothing against my friends at Blue Buffalo or some of the other high end food manufacturers who do not use corn. There is certainly nothing wrong with their product. In fact many of them are very good even if they are very expensive. Again, I simply do not feel the need to fix something that may not be broken in regard to corn.
