The Foster File Adventures in Fostering Penny and Lovey

,

This post is an update on the Fostering that the Lovely Shane and I are doing in our home (the dog training shack).

Our beautiful tiny beagle girl Penny found her forever home Saturday (August 10). I am sure that she is being well taken care of (I would write spoiled but we dont use that term). She was very happy and her new people were happy too. She will be an only dog (although she will live with a few cats). She will also have a couple of children with which to play. We were sad to see this little girl go but were happy to see her find a forever home!

This also allowed us to open our home to a new Foster girl. Lovey  is a really cute and very energetic mix breed puppy. She is about 4 months old. We think she is mixed with perhaps Border Collie, Pit Bull, and Labrador. She is a little bit of a challenge because her energy level is much higher than that of our senior guys and girl.

I have begun to work with her on loose leash walking. I must admit, for a young energetic puppy, she is progressing nicely. We have also been working with her on housebreaking and are thrilled to report that she is almost perfect in that regard!

Her recall is actually very good as well. She responds to her name and comes pretty consistently when called.

I have also taught her sit and down. We are next going to begin working on stay. She really seems to be eager to learn and Copper and Cody are helping her! I will keep you updated.

As I have mentioned many times before, if you are planning to add a new member to your pack, please, please, please consider adoption. There are so many beautiful dogs like Penny and Lovey who need forever homes.

If you need help locating a rescue group or shelter from which to adopt, please contact me. Also if you have a newly adopted guy/girl and need help training them to be polite dogs please contact me at any time!

The Foster File Foster Boy Biscuit Adopted! Welcome Foster Boy Trigger to the Pack!

,
Foster Boy Biscuit (He was so excited I had to hold his head still for the picture!)

The Awesome Shane!
The Lovely Shane and I are happy to report that our foster boy Biscuit now has a forever home with a nice lady in Tyrone, GA! He is really a good and smart little guy I am sure that he will be happy in his forever home! We are saddened to see him go but very happy that he now has a forever home! As you may remember, from an earlier blog post, He was going through puppy adolescence. He seemed to be recovering from this stage a little.

It is unclear how this happened, but, I somehow managed to  injure my lower back and was unable to attend the adoption event last Saturday at Petco in Peachtree City, GA. The Lovely and Awesome Shane took my place. Shane reports that Biscuit behaved like a perfect little gentleman. He was reportedly very polite and lovable (makes an old dog trainer proud :)).
Look at that cute Trigger face!!

Resting Trigger
The Lovely Shane also brought home our next foster boy. His name is Trigger. Trigger is an approximately two year old dachshund mix.  He is very smart and is pretty well behaved. He is a stray that someone abandoned. We can not figure out why anyone would abandon such a sweet little guy! Trigger is housebroken pretty well. We also understand that he in crate trained. We have not confined him to a crate yet because we have not needed to yet. He gets along great with the rest of the pack here!

Trigger pulls on the leash a little and we are working on Loose Leash Walking training. He already knew sit. He is a quick learner! He learned the down command mostly from observing Copper the Whopper Beagle!

Trigger, like Biscuit, really loves people! He has been our little shadow since he got here Saturday afternoon!

Trigger is available for adoption. However, the Lovely Shane is becoming pretty attached to him so he may have already found his forever home :) . I will keep you posted!

If you have recently added an adopted or rescue dog to your pack and desire help in training him/her to become a well behaved dog, please contact me!

Also, if you are looking for a new pack member, please, please, please consider adoption! There are many of these guys who desperately need a forever home! If you need help locating a dog, contact me for the names of some great local rescue groups!

Till Next Time-

The Foster File Update on our foster pups

,

Tiny Beagle Penny
Our first foster girl
I thought this may be a good opportunity to update you on the Dogs that the Lovely Shane and I have been fostering in our home lately.

Penny: As you may remember, Penny found a wonderful forever home with people who treat her very well (we do not use the word "spoil" :) ).

Foster Girl Lovey
While the Lovely Shane and I were on our cruise, we understand that Penny brought her new people to Petco on that Saturday to visit the groomers and the BullyWag volunteers. I understand that she is doing very well and is very happy!

After Penny found her forever people, we were blessed to foster an energetic little girl named Lovey. Lovey is a pit-bull mix. We think she is mixed with Border Collie. During the time she was with us she progressed very well. She learned to walk on a leash better (she still pulls a little). She learned all the behavioral stuff the rest of our pack knows like sit, stay, wait, leave it, etc. She is a very smart and active puppy. She is much younger and more energetic than the rest of our pack. Last Saturday, she went to a different foster home with more energetic pack mates. I am sure she is loving it! If you would like to add Lovey to your pack, she is still available and would make a great addition!

Foster Boy Whiskey
We also got to spend about a week with a wonderful little puppy named Whiskey. Whiskey is some sort of small hound mix. We think there may be some Dachshund in there. We are not certain what other breeds are in his genetics but it is something fairly small.

He loved playing with Lovey while he was with us! He also got along great with the rest of the pack! He is also a smart little guy. He was picking up very quickly on our packs routines and already knew most of the behavioral stuff.

The really great news is that he found his forever home on Saturday! We can not wait to hear how he is doing
Foster boy Biscuit
On Saturday, we were thrilled to welcome Biscuit as the newest foster member of the pack!

Biscuit is an adorable hound mix. He is about 8 months old (I think that is close).  Not sure of his ancestry either. Some have speculated Dachshund/Basset mix. That could be accurate, but I also think there is some larger dog like a Labrador in there as well. When I watch him walk and play I am reminded of the Bloodhound. I am the only one who has noted that, however.

Biscuit is ,sadly, a former victim of neglect. He was kept outside on a short chain in the weather.  I dont think he had much human contact.

He is not anxious so far as we can tell. He is very clingy, however. He follows us around closely. We have to be careful not to accidentally step on him. He loves affection! He is truly a scent hound. He loves treats. He loves any sort of food. He fits in very well with the Beagle boys in our pack! I know I have written this about all of our fosters but, he is very smart!
Foster Boy Biscuit at rest

He knew the sit command when he first arrived. He has already learned down and we are working on leave it.

The first time I put a leash on him he almost pulled my shoulder out of the socket. He pulls hard. I think it is because he spent so much time on the chain. I have been working with him on a no-pull harness. He is learning but we still need more time to work.

If you would like to add a good little hound boy to your pack, Biscuit is certainly worth considering!

Please remember, if you are think of getting a dog to add to your pack, there are a lot of sweet little guys and girls like the ones in this post. They need homes. They need love. Contact me before you contact a breeder or pet store. I will be happy to help you find a rescued dog who would love to live with you forever!

Also, if you have a new dog and are ready to begin training to get a polite and well behaved little guy or girl, please contact me at any time!

The Foster File Adventures of Tiny and Biscuit

,
Tiny and Biscuit playing on the back porch of the Dog Trainer Shack
I thought it prudent to give you all an update on our newest fosters, Tiny the Beagle and Biscuit the Basset Mix.

They are both good little guys!

We are not certain of Tinys age. We think he is about a year old. He seems to be a pure Beagle. He is however very small for a Beagle. He was rescued from the Fayette County (Georgia) Shelter. It is quite possible that there was some abuse in his background. He is very shy around people but loves other dogs!

He sort of cowers and sometimes whimpers a little at loud noises or sudden movement. He does not take treats from your hand which is very unusual for a Beagle. He came to us with a cough and what we think may be a respiratory infection. He has been on antibiotic medication for almost two weeks now and the cough is much improved.

walking skills

He is also getting better with people. He has never been violent at all, he is just scared. Once he gets used to you, he loves to sit on your lap and watch TV or just snuggle.

He is housebroken and crate trained. He has had no accidents since we got him.

He will be great for someone who does not have very young children in the house!

He is available for adoption and would really love a new forever home!

Biscuit and Trigger at play
Biscuit is also doing very well! He is about 10 months old. He is a Basset Mix. We are not sure exactly with what breeds he is mixed. I think probably Labrador and maybe bloodhound. He loves people and dogs! He is an active little guy. He loves playing with other dogs and with toys! He knows and few basic commands like sit and stay.

For the first several months of his life, Biscuit lived on a short chain in someones backyard. He had very little human interaction and was always on the chain. As a result of this , he pulls a little on the leash when he walks. This is getting better, however.
My buddy Biscuit. I had to hold his
head still to get a non-blurred picture.

Biscuit would also love a forever home! He is a little high energy so he either needs a playmate or needs to be exercised frequently. He will make someone a great pack addition!

If you are interested in adopting Biscuit or Trigger please contact me at anytime.

Also if you have a new adopted/rescued dog and would like help training the little guy or girl to be a polite dog please contact me! Because as I always tell you, "Polite Dogs = Happy People" . Let me help you become happy today!
