Welcome Foster Boy Charlie the Beagle!

,
The Lovely and Awesome Shane with our newest arrival,
Charlie the Little Beagle.

The Lovely and Awesome Shane, Cuddles the Corgi Mix, Copper the Whopper Beagle, Cody the Little Beagle, Trigger the Dapple Dachshund, Foster Boy Dr. Phil McBeagle, Foster Boy Sammy the Beagle, and I  are pleased to welcome our newest foster member, Charlie the Little Beagle to our pack!

I drove the Awesome Mobile (Shanes Car) to Animal Medical Clinic in Peachtree City, Georgia to pick up this little guy today. He has been in our pack for about four hours.
The Awesome Mobile parked outside the shack
during a recent snow storm.

Charlie is a senior guy (I am unsure of his exact age). He looks a lot like Cody the Little Beagle. Cody says Charlie is very handsome :) .

Charlie is recovering from pneumonia. We will have him on antibiotics for a little longer. He seems to feel pretty good and has a great appetite! He has a growth in one of his ears that needs to be taken care of after he recovers completely from the pneumonia.

After he has fully recovered, he will be available for adoption! If you are interested in adding a handsome senior beagle boy to your pack, please contact me for more information on little Charlie!

Dr. Phil McBeagle in the Dog Training office with
a few of his pack mates in the background ( Cody ,
Copper, and Trigger)
Dr. Phil McBeagle is still available for adoption. His anxiety is much better! He is acting like a typical beagle now :) . He is fully housebroken. His training is coming along very nicely! Copper and I have been working with him. He knows sit, down, stay and leave it. He is beginning to learn the wait command (handy for proper behavior at doorways). He is also getting much better at loose leash walking! Dr. Phil is a very sweet and loyal beagle. He is going to be a very good addition to some lucky persons pack! If you are interested in Dr. Phil, please contact me!

Sammy relaxing in Codys Basket Bed
Sammy is also making great progress! He is still on antibiotics. He is eating very well! We expect him to start gaining back his weight very soon! His anxiety is getting better. He is slowly learning that not all people will hurt him. Copper has sort of become his mentor. Copper follows him around and takes care of him. It is really neat to watch! Trigger is his playmate. They love to run and play together! As soon as he finishes the antibiotics and gets a little more weight on him, we will take him to the veterinarian to be neutered, micro chipped, heart worm tested and get his rabies vaccine. At that point he will be available for immediate adoption. We expect that to take two or three weeks. If you are interested in adding Sammy to your pack, please contact me!

Charley being visited by Sammy. Charley will be spending most
of his time in the crate until he is fully recovered.
Folks, if you are looking for a new addition to your pack, please, please, please consider adoption! There are so many of these little guys and girls who desperately want and need a forever home! We have three beautiful beagles here at the shack that really need love and attention. We love our foster guys/girls but our ultimate goal is to find them a forever home so that we can save the lives of more dogs. This is truly a life or death issue for these dogs. Were it not for volunteers at rescue groups, many of these guys/girls would be killed in shelters. Unfortunately, that is not at all an exaggeration. I wish it were not true..... but it is true.

If you have a little guy or girl with anxiety issues, as is unfortunately very common in rescue/adopted dogs, Copper and I are happy to assist you! Also if you need help getting your little guy or girl to be a polite dog, please contact me! I always tell you: "Polite Dogs = Happy People". Let me help you get happy today!

The Local Heroes of Dog Rescue

,
I have been promising for a while to write a blog entry about some of my friends at the local canine rescue agencies. In the title, I call these people heroes. To the dogs that they help, and to me, they really are heroes.
These people volunteer their time to help provide forever homes for some of Gods most innocent and precious creatures. In most cases, they literally save these dogs lives by removing them from local animal shelters before the dogs are euthanized. These wonderful volunteers, the foster parents, open their homes to these dogs until they are adopted.

These heroes work many hours on the weekends at various events around town (pet stores, etc.) to show these beautiful animals to potential adoptive parents. In addition to that, they constantly are raising funds to provide food and other essentials for the animals that are in their care.

During my time working at Petco in Peactree City, GA, I was blessed to meet a few of these wonderful heroes. I hesitate to mention names because I know I will leave many good people out. I will tell you about a couple of them here. My apologies to the others that I do not mention. I am sure that I will have occasion to write about your work in the future.

Based in Douglasville, GA ,BullyWag is a organization dedicated to saving the lives of dogs and finding them forever homes. They concentrate primarily on Pit Bull Breeds. Michelle Crampo brings a van load of dogs to Petco in Peachtree City every Saturday. She fosters many of these guys in her home. Many of these dogs find their forever homes as a result of the work that she does. She also has a soft spot for Beagles and Great Pyrenees. I adopted Copper from Michelle in January 2013. He has been a great addition to our pack! You can meet this hero on almost any Saturday afternoon at the Petco in Peachtree City. She will be more than happy to help you select the perfect dog for you and help you provide a forever home to one of these beautiful dogs!

Southern Crescent Canine Rescue
Based in Milner, GA Southern Crescent Canine Rescue saves the lives of many dogs and finds them forever homes.

Sandra Bray and Lew are two of the heroes at Southern Crescent Canine Rescue. They both do great work fostering dogs in their homes and almost every Saturday you can find them at Petco in Peachtree City.

Southern Crescent has a great variety of breeds of dogs.  Sandra and Lew and any of their volunteers are always happy to help you find the perfect little guy or girl for your family!

As always, if you are looking for an addition to your pack, I strongly recommend both of these organizations. If you are outside the Fayette County/ South Metro Atlanta Area, check Petfinder to find a rescue group near you!

Once you choose a little guy or girl to add to your pack, I will be happy to provide you with guidance on transitioning him/her to your home. I will also be happy to help you train your new pack member to be a well behaved and polite addition to your family. Please feel free to contact me at any time.

Very good Canines Are The Effect Of Constant Coaching

,

Shelters are filled with puppies that didnt live up to owners requirements. Correct coaching will create a excellent properly-behaved loved ones pet. Making your pet using this method doesnt need to be difficult, if you make investments enough time to make it happen with a few simple actions.

With aggressive pet dogs it is advisable to get started slowly. Competitive puppies see their selves because the superior part in the package and attempting for taking that function from their website too rapidly may result in a poor reply from your dog. To protect yourself from bites or issues, acquire small steps in developing on your own as being the package head.

When educating a puppy simple instructions, begin with sit. Here is the quickest a single for any canine to learn. Keep his favored treat just above his nose area, and completely say sit. Most puppies will naturally sit back at this moment. Provide him the handle and dont neglect to compliment him profusely. If he doesnt stay, carefully press his back end finish to the floor. Right after he has been seated for a couple of secs, supply him with the take care of, and like before, be sure you compliment him.

Dogs generally focus on something when overlooking every thing close to them, except when something disrupts that extreme concentration. If you do it enough instances, your pet will watch for your indicators rather than focusing on other stuff.

Dont pressure your pet to go into his crate. Alternatively, profusely praise him when he goes in his crate on his. Younger puppies, particularly, could possibly be fairly afraid of the kennel after it is initial launched. In the event you power these to enter it their anxiety may well develop into terror. Their natural interest could eventually override their anxiety.

If your canine tends to chew on the shoes or boots or any other house products, you can cease this behavior by offering your pet a yummy substitute, like a unprocessed hide bone tissue, to chew. Your dog will likely give up your shoes in favor of the uncooked cover up, because the only explanation he or she is chewing your shoes or boots is that he / she is fed up and needs one thing to perform.

If you are seeking to coach a teething dog to never chew on your own garments or valuables, provide it with a proper product which to chew. Teething puppies offer an instinctive must chew, to be able to relieve the pain. Nonetheless, dont give your pup aged boots or clothes, because they will be taught that those items are ok to chew on.

Make an effort to get the dogs attention while you are training him or her. Make use of dogs brand when providing a command. This will likely get his focus so they know to adhere to the demand. Your puppy will recognize their brand and they can see you want their interest.

As being a proactive pet owner is the first task in instruction your pooch. An owner who anticipates problematic conditions for his or her puppy, and functions to keep him from all those circumstances anytime you can, can have a much better behaved dog. Comprehensive training is definitely not as essential if you achieve to find out your pet to help you expect his activities.

dog-training photo:guard dog training equipment

When coaching a pet dog to your leash it is very important keep your leash reduce. Each time a dog will get the chance to investigate new sights, appears to be and odors over a go walking, he typically gets extremely excitable. Your pet dog may take on his or her leash. Great puppy owners dont permit this conduct. As an alternative, they promote their canines just to walk with many slack within their leash.

One particular idea to remember when training your dog is to ensure that you make it totally crystal clear for your dog what exactly it is that your are disciplining it for. This will be significant to prevent misunderstandings and also to instruct your dog precisely what is desired and what is undesired conduct. An illustration of this things to prevent is hitting your dog time previous as well as in an alternative space from which it shredded your couch.

Instruct your puppy the "Leave it!" command. This command is essential in daily situations. Apply it if your canine attempts to seize food off a kitchen table or try to eat rabbit poop if you are out for a go walking. To obtain the pet to adhere to your control, keep a pleasure inside your palm (have one out of the other palm, also). Keep your hands available, and once he applies to the deal with, close up your hand when you say the demand "Let it sit!" Then offer you him another take care of, and discard normally the one you told him to depart. Repeat this step a few times, and then he will learn to "Leave it!" when you inform him to.

As we have talked about in this article, getting a satisfied, healthier, and nicely-tweaked dog will not be a hopeless aspiration. You should train your dog and present him a lot of attention and adore. Adopting the ideas provided in this article will bring about you owning a dog which you will be pleased with.

Leader of the Pack

,

Dominant Aggression:

Although it may seem cute when a young puppy growls, this could be the first signs of aggression. Food guarding and snapping at guests, may seem harmless when a dog is small, but people don’t understand is that this dog is showing the early signs of dominance. The truth is that this pup is probably going to grow up to be aggressive to family members in addition to strangers. Early growling can easily develop into an adult that tries to take control of the house. Dominant Aggression needs to be controlled from the start, (no matter how cute or small the dog is).

Often people will say that dog aggression seems to appear out of the blue, but there are always warning signs and early indicators of aggressive tendancies. For instance “offensive (dominance-related) aggression is often indicated by high postures, staring and chasing (Borchelt and Voith, 1996; Lindsay, 2001). Unfortunately, posturing and body language are often overlooked and growling as well as food guarding is simply punished, to the point the dog stops giving warning signals and goes straight to biting.

Dogs are pack animals and they live a pack life that has been bred into them since the beginning of time. Their very nature demands a pack order and if one is not set up for them, they will take it upon themselves to develop their own pack order by which they live. If the owner doesn’t establish itself as the pack leader and all humans to rank above the dog, it may take it upon itself to become the alpha. This is why many dogs will only obey one person in the household. It all comes down to how the dog views its order in pack.

Proper socialization at an early age can help reduce the chance of aggression. A dogcan be influenced by its experiences during early life, a time that is critical for establishing social relationships (Scott and Fuller, 1965). Puppies raised in isolation until the end of the sensitive period (12 weeks of age) tend to show deficits in play activity and to behave aggressively towards peers (Fox and Stelzner, 1967). Even if a dog learns to interact appropriately with littermates, these social skills may not be retained unless the dog continues to receive frequent conspecific socialization”. (Lindsay, 2001). The socialization must be ongoing and varied in order to expose the dog to as many things, people and stimulus as possible.

Prevention is the best cure, but to get control of an already dominant dog you must have his view of the pack order changed. He needs to be moved to the bottom of the list in terms of dominance. He must realize that all humans rank higher than himself. This is done by monitoring the order of every aspect of the dog’s life. Dominant dogs do not sleep on the bed or in the bedroom. The best place to sleep goes to the pack leader. Dominant dogs never eat from the table and are always fed “after dinner,” (lower pack members always eat last). Humans must have first access to all resources, to establish that the dog is the lowest ranking member of the pack.

Spaying and neutering the dog can help in reducing aggressive tendencies. However, not always in the case of females. “Most household aggression involves spayed females (Sherman et al., 1996) Furthermore: in regard to multiple dog homes.

Overall (1997) observed that compared to neutered males, aggression in intact males is often more intense, quicker, and lasts longer. In contrast, spayed females have been found to initiate aggression more frequently than intact females (Sherman et al., 1996) and to display more dominance-related aggression after spaying”. (Voith and Borchelt, 91982; Kim et al., 2006).

The real key to controlling and preventing aggression is obedience training. This is a very important part of establishing some kind of order. The training method, when dealing with aggression, should not be the strictly a motivational approach. Motivation is used but it must be tempered with corrections for all unwanted behaviour. It is essential to interrupt all aggressive and dominant behaviour and provide the dog with a healthy and happy alternative. However, if the dog’s dominance has developed to a point where it tries to attack the handler when it gets corrected…then its time to get some professional help.

Progress report on our foster dog Penny the tiny Beagle

,
I am not sure if you can tell in these pictures but, little Penny is making great progress! She is filling out. I really do think she is putting on weight though I have not weighed her. Believe it or not there is no scale in the Dog Trainer Shack, not even a bathroom scale. I suppose, at some point we should get one but it is not exactly a high priority in our lives right now.

She is eating like a little horse! As is typical with Beagles, she loves food. She is led by her little nose!

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have been using Nutri-Cal in an attempt to put some weight on this little girl and I think it is working.

She is the first dog that I have ever seen that does not like Nutri-Cal right out of the tube. I take two small treats and make her a Nutri-Cal sandwich with them. She loves that! I have been doing this two or three times a day.
As you can see in the picture, she loves her new foster brothers, Copper and Cody, here they are relaxing in the back yard at the Dog Training Shack.

The Lovely Shane recently took her on a little trip to her parents house. She did this to see how well little Penny would get along with her parents toy poodle (Benny). We were also curious how well Penny would do around our grandson.

The Lovely Shane reports that Penny did great with the grandyoungun (for those of you who do not live in the south, that means grandchild). However, Penny was very vocal around Benny. She did not really like him getting in her face and barking. I suppose I would have been vocal too in her position.  However, this indicates that Penny may not be great around toy breeds. I think they probably make her anxious and nervous. This is something that may get better with time and more (slow and controlled) socialization with toy dogs.

Penny seems to be very willing to learn. Here is a video that I made of me and the Beagles. We were working on waiting at the door. Penny saw Copper and Cody working on that behavior and she joined in the fun. She did very well for a first attempt. Then we came in the house and the Beagle boys and I were working on "leave it" and Penny joined in with us again. For the first attempt, she did great!

Penny does still need some work on behavioral stuff though. It is all fairly minor things such as, she likes to jump on you for attention, we are working on this.  She also likes to nudge you with her nose when she wants to be petted. I discourage this behavior because, I should be the one who pets her, not the other way around. But, as I wrote, all this is minor. She is overall, a very sweet and fairly polite and well behaved little girl!

Penny is scheduled to be at Petco in Peachtree City  this Saturday. She will be there from around 11 till around 4. If you are interested, please stop by the Bully Wag table and see her.

She will also probably make an appearance at a fund raiser for Bully Wag in Newnan on Friday. I will post updates here as we get closer to Friday.

If you would like more information on Penny or on adding an adopted dog to your pack, please contact me at anytime!

Also, if you have recently added a new member to your pack, I will be happy to help you with your in an effort to make your new little guy or girl a polite and well behaved dog.

Please also contact me with any questions/concerns. As always, my goal is to help you train a polite and well behaved dog!

Till next time

Increase Your Partnership With The Dog

,

You might have go through each of the publications and noticed all the suggest that pet owners and personal trainers have given, but you would like to bust away from the worn out older ways of training your dog. This post offers a summary of new and interesting methods to coach your dog that you may possibly not have access to observed well before.

The diet plan you will be feeding your pet dog should go with their requirements and process level. The dietary plan that suits a functioning pet is not the same as those of a pet dog that lounges in your home for hours on end. Engage with your veterinary clinic about what is right for your pup and dont neglect their needs changes since they age.

Make to provide instruction to the pet continuously. Most dogs will not likely grab a new command with only a couple of attempts. It is sometimes valuable to focus on 1 or 2 commands a day to ensure by your sessions you happen to be reproducing adequate times to solve the directions solidly inside your dogs storage.

Your friends and relations, generally, will not be dog coaches. Whilst these about you may have assistance and thoughts on how you must deal with your dogs coaching, it does not always mean they may be proper. This input may be effectively-that means, nevertheless, it is possible to overlook nearly all of it if you have used time to do your research.

Do not forget that at times perseverance is key, dont grow to be discouraged should your dog doesnt capture on immediately. It will be great if every single dog could recognize every single demand but you need to keep in mind they cant. Just attempt to make sure you are mindful of your dogs emotions so when they actually do stick to your control reward them so they understand what they do was right.

You should ensure to enjoy your personal dish initially well before serving your puppy. This reveals your puppy you are head of your package helping determine your dominance. Your dog will be more likely to follow your other commands if they is aware that you are currently the supervisor since you eat first.

Consider transferring your speech down or up in a particular approach linked to individual directions, to help your puppy remember them greater. Pet dogs are amazing at being familiar with pitch distinctions, more than learning the noises in the phrases. So if you alter your sound a bit when you say a specific order, your pet will be more very likely to remember what to do.

Start off your puppy education with one thing that can be feasible for him to find out. This will likely work as a basis for even more instruction and also assist you to see fast achievement. You will observe a lot more outcomes when you are training by doing this.

Have flexibility when coaching your pet dog. Be prepared to fluctuate or modify a schedule if it isnt doing work. You might need to attempt different areas or days of working day. You might need to change the duration of your coaching routine if it is too long a program, or short.

Give your dog love each and every time you can see him. This is especially essential if you are distressed with his habits. When you reprimand him you could perform opposite of what you want to do. He might become not as likely to respond to your education. Be wonderful, even though he just managed an issue that enables you to produced.

dog-training photo:dog training spray

You should train your pet to stop when you provide them with their command. Use beneficial encouragement to motivate excellent actions. When you say "no", your pet dog fails to realize how to respond. All dogs are not the same and may reply to distinct instruction.

When toilet training your new dog, always keep him over a strict serving routine. Supply meals two times a day, simultaneously daily, and get your pup out to remove soon after doing the food. Youthful puppies often need to use the lavatory rapidly right after a meal. Supplying your dog the opportunity go outdoors will receive him with a routine and assistance to protect against mishaps.

One suggestion to remember when instruction your pet, will be certain to never ever self-control your pet for poor behavior as he is ill. This will likely only confuse your dog and might lead to him not to answer discipline down the road. Samples of this would be, in case your canine vomits or defecates in a fashion that is not common to his regular actions.

Instruct a puppy the "Let it rest!" demand. This demand is very important in day-to-day circumstances. Apply it when your pet tries to seize food off a desk or eat rabbit poop when you are out to get a go walking. To have the pet to go by your command, hold a reward with your fingers (have one in the other hand, also). Carry your hand open, and when he goes for the take care of, close up your hands as you may say the command "Let it rest!" Then provide him the other treat, and throw away the main one you told him to depart. Continue this phase a few times, and then he will become familiar with to "Let it rest!" when you tell him to.

In conclusion, you would like new ways to coach your pet dog,, in an effort to crack from the traditional methods everyone utilizes. Your pet is exclusive and tend to be you. Provided that you adhere to these new techniques as suggested, you could find that these concepts will bring you accomplishment in a whole new way.

What sort of harness or collar is good for a dog who pulls on the leash

,

Dogs that pull on the leash is the second most common thing that people ask me about. Second only to housebreaking. If you have a dog that pulls on the leash there are loose leash walking techniques that you can learn. I will be happy to teach you how to train your dog to walk properly on a leash using these techniques.

For a dog that is really bad about pulling, in addition to the loose leash walking techniques, I also suggest a no-pull harness.

There is a difference between a no-pull designed harness and a traditional flat harness.

The green and black and the orange and black harnesses pictured above are both flat harnesses. The orange and black one is a mesh comfort harness. Both of these are good for their intended purpose which is to distribute the pull from the leash across the body rather than at one point on the neck ( as with a flat collar). They do prevent choking. However they offer no resistance to pulling. They actually tend to encourage pulling because the dog gets no resistance.

There are a couple of options that I recommend for no-pull harnesses:
The Petsafe Easy Walk is a very good solution. The handsome Labrador in the picture is sporting an Easy Walk harness. It has a D-ring in the front of the collar. The d-ring in the  front is attached to a buckle that pulls the two nylon pieces in the front tighter when the dog pulls, thus giving the dog resistance. When adjusted properly, the harness does not really squeeze the dog it simply gives him resistance. The Easy Walk is the harness that I used to teach Copper proper loose leash walking technique. It is a really good product however, my experience has been that it does not fit all dogs properly. The other caution I will give you for this harness and pretty much any no-pull type harness is that they are only for walking. After the walk they need to come off because the dog can easily chew them up. Copper chewed up two of the Easy Walks because I neglected to remove them after walking.

The Beagle in the picture is wearing a typical no-pull harness that is available in many different brands at your local pet stores. It has a little bit of mesh in the front but it is different than the mesh flat harness. Notice the padded strings that attach to the mesh and go behind the little beagle guys front legs. These strings are attached to the d-ring to which the leash is attached. When the dog pulls, he feels resistance on the strings. When adjusted properly, this does not hurt him, he simply feels resistance. This is the type of harness that I am using now to train Cody, our newest addition to the pack. This harness is generally about half the price of the Easy Walk and seems to fit a wider range of dogs. The Easy Walk is a little easier to get on and off the dog, however.  I will give you the caution again that this harness needs to come off  the dog after a walk. They will chew this one too!
The brown collar here is a martingale collar. These are very popular with people who own sight hounds (or greyhounds). The reason they are popular is that they do not easily pull over the head. This is important with the sight hounds because typically the neck is wider than the head. After your dog stops pulling as much, you may want to transition him to a collar for walking. The martingale is a good choice. When adjusted properly, the martingale fits snug when the leash is pulled but does not choke the dog. I have a martingale on Copper. I have the leash connected directly to the martingale most of the time when we walk. It took a while to make the transition.

These are the products that I have used in training many times and I know that they work. There is a new product that I have heard nothing but good things about from people I respect. That product is the Walk-in-Sync harness. It is a little more expensive but seems to have the advantages of the Easy Walk while fitting a wider variety of dogs. If you are interested you can find more information at http://dogwalkinsync.com/ . At some point later on, I will test this product and post the results on this blog. The black lab in the picture is wearing a Walk-in-sync.
If you have a dog that pulls on the leash and/or is not well behaved on walks, please contact me at any time. I will be happy to help you!

After a rough few months the Dog Trainer is back!

,
Dog Trainer just before back surgery
The Lovely and Awesome Shane
As many of you know, I have not been working much the last several months. I have had some pretty severe problems with nerve pain in my right leg. It turns out that the problem seems to have been a pinched nerve in my lower back. The nerve was being pinched by a ruptured disc.

After trying physical therapy and three rounds of very uncomfortable steroidal injection in the lower back, I had surgery to remove the offending disc material. The surgery was done two months ago.

I am still having some pain but it is getting better every day. I am not yet back to doing all the handyman work that I usually provide but, I am back to dog training!

The lovely and awesome Shane has been, and continues to be a big help to me!
Copper is ready for work!

Copper, my demo beagle,  is also looking forward to getting back to work! We are both ready to help you with any training issues that you may have!

If you would like Copper and I to help you train your dogs to be polite little guys and girls, please contact us!

I always say, " Polite Dogs = Happy People". Let us help you to become happy today!

The Foster File Adventures in Fostering Penny and Lovey

,

This post is an update on the Fostering that the Lovely Shane and I are doing in our home (the dog training shack).

Our beautiful tiny beagle girl Penny found her forever home Saturday (August 10). I am sure that she is being well taken care of (I would write spoiled but we dont use that term). She was very happy and her new people were happy too. She will be an only dog (although she will live with a few cats). She will also have a couple of children with which to play. We were sad to see this little girl go but were happy to see her find a forever home!

This also allowed us to open our home to a new Foster girl. Lovey  is a really cute and very energetic mix breed puppy. She is about 4 months old. We think she is mixed with perhaps Border Collie, Pit Bull, and Labrador. She is a little bit of a challenge because her energy level is much higher than that of our senior guys and girl.

I have begun to work with her on loose leash walking. I must admit, for a young energetic puppy, she is progressing nicely. We have also been working with her on housebreaking and are thrilled to report that she is almost perfect in that regard!

Her recall is actually very good as well. She responds to her name and comes pretty consistently when called.

I have also taught her sit and down. We are next going to begin working on stay. She really seems to be eager to learn and Copper and Cody are helping her! I will keep you updated.

As I have mentioned many times before, if you are planning to add a new member to your pack, please, please, please consider adoption. There are so many beautiful dogs like Penny and Lovey who need forever homes.

If you need help locating a rescue group or shelter from which to adopt, please contact me. Also if you have a newly adopted guy/girl and need help training them to be polite dogs please contact me at any time!

Why Is Dog Training The very best Thing We Can Do For Our Pet dogs

,

Were always told how essential it is to train our dogs, however what exactly is dog training and why is it so essential anyhow?

The following list discusses why it is absolutely important that we provide proper socialization and training to our canine friends.

dog training

Please read these 5 undeniable reasons why we owe it to our canines to practice them:.

Dog training helps to develop and enhance a productive and healthy relationship with your canine.
Dog training opens up the lines of communication between you and your canine. A real type of two method communication is established through favorable non violent dog training. You and your canine will discover to interact with each other in an equally considerate manner, based on co-operation and understanding.
A well mingled and practiced dog will become a fantastic life-long buddy, work companion and friend. An untrained dog can rapidly become a burden and a limitless source of aggravation. Instead of having an uneven relationship where you are continuously chewing out or reprimanding your inexperienced canine, why not set your dog up to succeed by supplying some leadership and clear guidelines for him/her to follow?
A qualified dog is a well appreciated and trusted member of society who is welcomed virtually anywhere. This has to be a favorable thing for your relationship does not it?
Training avoids many usual "pet dog issues" from ever arising.
A whole array of typical dog behavior troubles can be avoided through some obedience training. ,
Foster Boy Biscuit (He was so excited I had to hold his head still for the picture!)

The Awesome Shane!
The Lovely Shane and I are happy to report that our foster boy Biscuit now has a forever home with a nice lady in Tyrone, GA! He is really a good and smart little guy I am sure that he will be happy in his forever home! We are saddened to see him go but very happy that he now has a forever home! As you may remember, from an earlier blog post, He was going through puppy adolescence. He seemed to be recovering from this stage a little.

It is unclear how this happened, but, I somehow managed to  injure my lower back and was unable to attend the adoption event last Saturday at Petco in Peachtree City, GA. The Lovely and Awesome Shane took my place. Shane reports that Biscuit behaved like a perfect little gentleman. He was reportedly very polite and lovable (makes an old dog trainer proud :)).
Look at that cute Trigger face!!

Resting Trigger
The Lovely Shane also brought home our next foster boy. His name is Trigger. Trigger is an approximately two year old dachshund mix.  He is very smart and is pretty well behaved. He is a stray that someone abandoned. We can not figure out why anyone would abandon such a sweet little guy! Trigger is housebroken pretty well. We also understand that he in crate trained. We have not confined him to a crate yet because we have not needed to yet. He gets along great with the rest of the pack here!

Trigger pulls on the leash a little and we are working on Loose Leash Walking training. He already knew sit. He is a quick learner! He learned the down command mostly from observing Copper the Whopper Beagle!

Trigger, like Biscuit, really loves people! He has been our little shadow since he got here Saturday afternoon!

Trigger is available for adoption. However, the Lovely Shane is becoming pretty attached to him so he may have already found his forever home :) . I will keep you posted!

If you have recently added an adopted or rescue dog to your pack and desire help in training him/her to become a well behaved dog, please contact me!

Also, if you are looking for a new pack member, please, please, please consider adoption! There are many of these guys who desperately need a forever home! If you need help locating a dog, contact me for the names of some great local rescue groups!

Welcoming a foster member to the pack Penny the tiny Beagle!

,
The Lovely Shane and I are trying something new. Today we welcomed a new foster member to our pack.

Penny is a tiny beagle. She is about a year old. She was rescued by Bully Wag from a  shelter in rural North Georgia. Because the shelter is in such a rural area the kill rate is comparatively high. She just got back from surgery today. She was spayed and had a hernia removed. She is doing pretty well from what we can tell. She is very underweight. We are going to work on putting some weight on her. I dont think it will be too difficult.

For at least the next couple of days she will be mostly resting to recover from her surgery. After she gets to feeling better, Copper and I will begin training with her. We are very encouraged because she is already responding to her new name. By the way, Michelle picked the name, Penny, because she has a copper like coloring on her head. Since Copper is more of a boys name and Michelle already named one of her rescue dogs Copper (my demo dog, Copper Whopper) this new little girl was named Penny like the copper colored US coin.

Very soon we will be taking her to Petco in Peachtree City on Saturdays from 12-4pm. She will be with the other Bully Wag dogs. Her first trip to Petco will be Saturday August 3, 2013.

Her appetite seems to be very good. Tomorrow I am going to stop by one of the local pet stores and get her some Nutri-Cal. Nutri-Cal is a high calorie vitamin supplement. It is great for putting on weight and stimulating the appetite. It is a thick syrupy paste. The dogs really seem to love it. They will usually eat it right out of the tube.

I often recommend Nurti-Cal to people who have dogs that need to gain weight. But, if your dog has a health problem that is causing him/her to loose the weight always check with your veterinarian first.

In Pennys case the weight loss is most likely from malnutrition.

I do not normally encourage people to use a name brand when a generic is available however, in this case I always recommend the Nutri-Cal brand. When I worked for Petco, in my experience with customers, the Nutri-Cal worked much better than the Petco generic. It is worth the extra cost.

I will keep all of you posted on Pennys progress.

As always, if you are planning on adding a new member to your pack, please, consider adoption. If you are interested in adopting a cute little Beagle girl, please contact me or Michelle Crampo at BullyWag for more information on Penny and adoption in general.

If you have a dog related question or have any dog training needs, please contact me.

Till next time

And the Winner Is

,
My husband and I had a wonderful time tonight at the Pilgrim Lutheran School fundraising auction and dinner.  Bravo Dog Training raised some money for the school with a dog training basket - full of great toys, treats and more, plus a certificate for either a board and train program or private lessons.  I didnt see the final bid, but I know we raised about $400 for Ethans school.  Thanks to everyone who bid!

Heres Ethan with me, ready to head out to the auction.  It was a country-western theme, hence the blue jeans.  Yes, I do wear pants other than blue jeans; it has been known to happen.  Once or twice.  Ethan played with the other kids in a babysitting room, so Mom and Dad got to enjoy the night like proper grown ups.  It was a fun event.

Earlier today I had an initial session with a wonderful couple from our church, Cedar Hills United Church of Christ.  They have a very enthusiastic 2-year-old Lab who will be a ton of fun to train.  The family has been through a couple other trainers that they werent happy with, but after our session today they asked to schedule 6 additional sessions!  I think it will be a good match, and Im happy that they have found a trainer that can work with them to mold their zealous (okay, cover your ears puppy, obnoxious) Labrador into a model citizen.  Oh, and Im happy that trainer is me!  I do love the wild and crazy dogs.  It is so much fun to take all that energy and redirect it to positive, useful behaviors.

One problem that we got to work on right away was the dogs habit of darting out the front door and playing a joyous (for the dog, let me be clear. Owners, not-so-joyous) game of catch-me-if-you-can.  Lets be honest, even for an Olympic level sprinter (which no one in this family is, to my knowledge), catching a long-legged 90 lb lean-mean-Labrador-running-machine is hopeless for us bumbling 2 legged humans.  I wrote a piece not long ago on "un-training" a dog to come when called.  Their dog was a good example of this.  The solution?  Going back to square one and training the dog to come using my "hidden food" recall method, teaching "wait" at the front door (and when coming out of the crate, just for extra training opportunities), and a strict ban on any chances to get out the front door until he is fully trained.

Do you know a dog that doesnt come when called?  Even a dog that comes 90% of the time isnt trained well enough - that 10% can be anything from frustrating to fatal.  But it is a fixable problem!

DOG Training THE FIRST 2 COMMANDS EVERY CANINE SHOULD KNOW

,

There are numerous dog training strategies and approaches that declare to be the fastest, simplest or most affective means to practice your canine. The 2nd thing that all training methods have in usual is that the first action is to teach the pet dog basic commands.

The very first command you must teach is SIT. With a couple of slight differences, most suggestions about dog training agree. The simplest method to teach this command is to trigger the preferred result to take place without much effort. For very young puppies, hold their food bowl above and behind their head. Your puppy looks up, loses his balance, and sits. You reinforce by saying the command, SIT, then commend puppy and reward with a treat.

Repeat this procedure during each meal time and with treats till he will SIT on command without a food stimulus. Older canines have better balance so an additional step could need to be utilized. Some dog training techniques recommend making use of a leash without any slack to keep your pet dog still, then simply using a treat held above and behind his head, command SIT. If your dog withstands, utilize your forefinger and thumb to use pressure simply in front of his hip bone or slide your turn over rump and use pressure as you tuck legs and tail under to trigger him to SIT. As constantly, praise and treat for preferred result Every other basic command will develop on the success of the SIT Command.

Every dog needs a calm and confident leader to feel secure. Any dog owner can show that he is a strong leader by encouraging and rewarding good behavior. Proving to your pet that youre a strong leader makes training easier and establishes a bond between pet and owner.

TIP! Rewarding your dog generously and properly is essential in training your dog. Treats are great to give your dog when he does something good, but timing is very important when doing so.

The 2nd command that you have to practice your canine is NO. This command needs consistency from you, as the trainer, and every member of the family. The NO command need to always be talked in a sharp guttural tone and alone. Do not use with your pet dogs name, or in a run scared or high pitched tone that just comes normally if you were to walk in and see your dog chewing your preferred pair of shoes. Your tone needs to be authoritative sharp and strong to relay your annoyance. Withhold attention as punishment. Consistency is the secret to practice your canine.

If you want to teach your dog to get down off of your chair, train OFF as your command. To instruct your dog to lay down, very first command him to SIT. As you train your dog each brand-new command, be sure to combine each command so patterns do not establish and the action of each different command is rewarded when accomplished.

Always use the same words when giving commands to your dog. Using different phrasing for basic commands can confuse your dog. Saying "Come" today and saying "Come here" the next, in the dogs mind, is like teaching two different commands, however, the behavior is expected to be the same. Keep it simple and keep it consistent.

TIP! If your dog tends to chew on your shoes or other household items, you can stop this behavior by giving the dog a yummy substitute, such as a raw hide bone, to chew. The dog will likely abandon your shoes in favor of the raw hide, as the only reason he or she is chewing your shoes is that he or she is bored and needs something to do.

Work out all excess energy and practice your dog in a quiet distraction complimentary location. Start at SIT, utilize your pet dogs name and command HEEL. If your dog does not remain with you and darts away, turn in the other direction and repeat command HEEL and pet dogs name.

The last essential command that is a should while beginning to practice your pet dog is the command COME. This command appears so simple, after all all dogs desire to come to you? The trouble with training your pet dog to COME is that owners do not utilize it commonly enough in daily communications. When you open the fridge door, your canine will COME. The command has to be enhanced by putting your canine in SIT and STAY, then by changing your place,
dog training

command COME, and utilize your pet dogs name. Praise and reward with each and every preferred outcome. One essential indicate remember is NEVER EVER correct or discipline your pet dog for replying to the COME command. When you need your pet dog to react to COME the most is when his safety is at danger, the reality is that. Your dog has actually run out and might be in risk of street traffic,. COME returns your pet dog to the safety of your home. Your fear feedback will naturally make you wish to fix your pet dog for going out. Stay constant with your training, praise and reward your dog.
